Millwall's Harry Smith has announced he is taking time away from football to deal with depression and a gambling addiction.
The 22-year-old forward has been dealing with a knee injury since returning from a loan spell at Swindon in December.
"Millwall Football Club can confirm that its player, Harry Smith, is receiving help in relation to mental health and addiction issues," a club statement on read. "As has been the case throughout, the club will continue to offer Harry its absolute support and guidance, as it would do for any player or member of staff connected to Millwall, at a difficult time for him and his family."
Smith wrote on Twitter: "I have made a decision to take some time away from football to seek some help in relation to depression and gambling issues which I've been battling for a number of years.
"Has not been an easy decision to make for me but has been made easier with the support of my close friends, agency, the club and most importantly my parents and the gaffer.
"Football is my life but I just feel especially the last 12 months I've not kicked on & it's been tough having to deal with these issues while trying to perform to a high standard which ultimately I don't think I've done enough.
"For the first time in a long time I am starting to see a way forward."
In a statement on the Championship club's website, Millwall pledged their "absolute support and guidance" to Smith.
