India's Divyansh Singh Panwar won silver in the 10m air rifle event after shooting a score of 249 in the final at the Beijing World Cup on Friday. His medal assures India of a berth in the event at the Tokyo Olympics.

China's Hui Zicheng won gold with a score of 249.4 while Russia's Grigorii Shamakov won bronze with a score of 227.5.

This is 17-year-old Panwar's second medal at this World Cup. He had previously won gold in the 10m air rifle mixed team event with Anjum Moudgil on Thursday.

For India, it is the third medal at this World Cup. Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary had also won gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event on Wednesday.

Panwar finished third in the qualification round with a score of 629.2 to qualify for the final. Ravi Kumar (624.1) and Deepak Kumar (622.6) finished 44th and 57th respectively.

Panwar was only making his second senior World Cup appearance, having made his debut at the New Delhi event earlier this year, where he finished 12th.

Panwar first shot to prominence at the Lakshya Cup earlier this year, where he shot a score of 252.3 in the final -- bettering Russian Alexander Dryagin's world record score of 251.2 at the 2018 Changwon World Cup. The teenager also won gold at the Asian Championships in Taoyuan earlier this year, where he shot a score of 249.7 in the final.

Panwar is now just the second Indian man to win silver in the 10m air rifle event at a World Cup after Sanjeev Rajput, who won the same medal in 2010. Gagan Narang remains the only Indian to win gold in the men's 10m air rifle event at a World Cup.

Panwar is the fourth Indian shooter to earn a quota for the Tokyo Olympics. Anjum Modgil and Apurvi Chandela won two quotas in the women's 10m air rifle event and Saurabh Chaudhary won a quota in the 10m air pistol event for India.

The maximum possible quotas that any country can earn in an event is two. India has earned both their quotas for the 10m air pistol event now, though they can choose to send different shooters for the Olympics.
