India's Anjum Moudgil won silver in the women's 10m air rifle event at the ongoing ISSF Shooting World Championships in Changwon, South Korea on Monday. She shot a total of 248.4 to finish in the second position. Korea's Hana Im and Eunhea Jung won gold and bronze respectively with scores of 251.1 and 228.
Apurvi Chandela, the other Indian in the fray, finished fourth with 207 points. The Indian trio of Moudgil, Chandela and Maehuli Ghosh also won silver in the team event with a total of 1879 points, finishing behing Korea, who won gold with a score of 1886.2, setting a new world record in the event.
With this, Moudgil and Chandela became the first Indian shooters to win a quota for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The top four contenders in the senior event in the 10m air rifle at the World Championships earn an Olympic quota for their country. The maximum possible quotas that any country can earn is two. India has earned both their quotas for this event, though they can choose to send different shooters for the Olympics.
Manisha Keer then added a silver medal in the junior women's trap event after equaling the junior world record with a score of 41 in the final. She finished second after losing a shoot-off to Italy's Erica Sessa. Russia's Daria Semianova won bronze.
Keer became the first Indian woman to medal in the women's trap event at the Worlds in the junior category. She had qualified for the final after finishing fifth in qualification with a score of 115.
Earlier in the day, Moudgil and Chandela had finished fourth and sixth respectively in the qualification round, with scores of 628.7 and 627.5 respectively.
Moudgil, who had won a silver in the 50m rifle 3 positions at the ISSF shooting World Cup in Mexico last month, had also won a silver medal in the same event at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast held earlier this year, where she set a qualification record, shooting a score of 589 to finish first in the qualification round.
The 24-year-old is an inspector in the Punjab Police and is coached by former Olympian Deepali Deshpande. Her mother was a university-level shooter and Moudgil was introduced to the sport by her.
With this medal, Moudgil became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the 10m air rifle event at the World Championships. India had earlier won two golds and a bronze on the opening day of the Worlds.
Arjun Singh Cheema won gold in the junior men's 50m pistol event, where India also secured gold in the team event. Gaurav Rana won bronze after finishing third.
