Steve Hansen pondering All Blacks extension as Dave Rennie looks overseas

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie remains interested in a move overseas as current All Blacks boss Steve Hansen ponders a contract extension through to the next Rugby World Cup.

Hansen was expected to stand down after next year's historic series against the British & Irish Lions, wrapping up a six-year tenure in rugby's top job.

But speaking at New Zealand's Halberg Awards, Hansen said coaching on through to the 2019 tournament in Japan, and pushing for a third consecutive William Webb Ellis Trophy, remained a possibility.

"I was 70-30 after the World Cup but I'm probably 50-50 now," Hansen told New Zealand's TV One news.

"We'll wait and see. I wouldn't get too carried away with it [speculation]. It's going to depend on family and how things are."

Hansen's revelation could see Rennie head overseas, despite the Chiefs boss being among the leading candidates to succeed the All Blacks boss.

And speaking to ESPN ahead of the Super Rugby season, the two-time title-winning coach said an offshore stint had always held great interest.

"I'm still keen to coach the All Blacks, I'm just not sure when," Rennie said.

"The plan has always been to do a coaching stint overseas, experience life in another country; a new culture; do some travelling with the wife.

"But I'm contracted here (Chiefs) until 2017 anyway."

Wales coach Warren Gatland, Ireland boss Joe Schmidt and outgoing Crusaders stalwart Todd Blackadder are some of the other candidates in line to succeed Hansen while the Highlanders' Jamie Joseph will take on the vacant Japan job after this year's Super Rugby season.
