2008 Outlook: Last year, Maine experienced its third most severe winter in 58 years, according to state deer and moose biologist Lee Kantar.

"We are looking at a decrease of about 5,000 deer from last year, making the total harvest fall to around 24,200 deer for the season," said Kantar.

Significant mortality across the state from the harsh winter has caused some districts to go to a "buck-only" hunt this fall.

The decrease in "any deer" permits is a good representation of the deer population outlook and sets the stage for the annual harvest.
