As it happened: Sindhu, Deepika make last 16; Pooja Rani in quarters, Sai Praneeth out

India's big names lived up to their status as favourites on Wednesday at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as PV Sindhu and Deepika Kumari entered the last 16. Debutant Pooja Rani also reached the quarterfinals in women's middleweight boxing after an emphatic win against Algeria's Ichrak Chaib. However, B Sai Praneeth's campaign ended after a 14-21, 14-21 loss to Mark Caljouw.

BADMINTON

PV Sindhu defeated Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi 21-9, 21-16 to top Group J and advance to knockouts. B Sai Praneeth ended his campaign without a win after losing 14-21, 14-21 to Mark Caljouw.

ARCHERY

World no. 1 Deepika Kumari notched contrasting wins in her round of 64 and round of 32 matches to progress to the last 16 in the women's individual event. Tarundeep Rai lost 6-5 to Israel's Itay Shanny in the second round (round of 32) of the men's individual event, while Pravin Jadhav lost 6-0 to USA's Brady Ellison in his second-round match.

BOXING

Pooja Rani entered the women's middleweight quarterfinals after defeating Algeria's Ichrak Chaib 5:0 (win on points) in a dominant performance.

HOCKEY

Women's pool A: India lost 4-1 to Great Britain. The Indian women can still make the knockouts but they have their work cut out for them.

ROWING

Arjun Lal and Arvind Singh finished sixth in the lightweight men's sculls semifinal A/B 2. They progress to final B, which determines finishes from seventh place to the 12th place.

SAILING

Men's skiff 49er race 4 (out of 12) -- KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar finish last in 19th place. Overall, they are currently in 18th place.
