THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Rams have signed veteran kicker Mason Crosby to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.
Rams coach Sean McVay said there's "a possibility" that Crosby could kick as early as Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. McVay also said the Rams "do not anticipate" releasing Lucas Havrisik. The Rams could use a standard elevation on Crosby three times before needing to sign him to the active roster.
Havrisik, whom the Rams signed in Week 8 to replace Brett Maher, has missed two field goals and an extra point in the Rams' past two games. Adding Crosby gives the Rams (6-6) a veteran while they make a late-season push for a playoff spot.
McVay called it a "unique opportunity" that the Rams could sign Crosby to the practice squad while continuing to carry Havrisik on the active roster. "[We] feel like he's a guy that we want to be able to continue to work with," McVay said.
McVay cited the experience, success and "crunch-time moments" Crosby has, as well as the ability to flex him from the practice squad, as the reasons behind the move.
Crosby played his first 16 NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers but did not re-sign with the team during the offseason. The veteran kicker went 24-for-25 from inside 50 yards last season but was 1-for-4 from kicks longer than 50 yards.
Crosby said that he worked out with the Rams about a month ago but that, at the time, "the timing wasn't there." He got a call Tuesday with the offer.
"With where this team is and trying to build and do something special here down the stretch, it feels like a good opportunity to continue to chase this dream," Crosby said. "It's every kid's dream to play professional [football]. I've been fortunate enough to play for a long time, but I don't take it for granted. I love every opportunity I have."
