To help identify which teams will be looking to acquire players for a playoff or championship push, which teams will trade players to accumulate more draft picks and which teams will mostly hold pat with what they have, we have broken down the rosters and draft picks for all 30 teams.
Along with identifying the big questions each team must answer leading up to the Feb. 10 trade deadline, we've listed the players who are off the board (either because they can't be traded due to some contract restriction or because the team wouldn't trade them in any situation), potential trade targets, value contracts and tough-to-move contracts (though if the past few years with John Wall, Russell Westbrook and others have taught us anything, it's that almost no contract is truly unmovable).

Atlanta Hawks

Front-office discussions: Is there enough body of work to determine that this roster does not work? What is the trade value of the expiring contracts of Lou Williams, Delon Wright and Gorgui Dieng? Will ownership sign off on going into the luxury tax (currently $2.4 million below)?
Off the board: Trae Young ($8.3M, Player 2026), Kevin Huerter ($4.3M, UFA 2026), Clint Capela ($18.6M, UFA 2025).
Young and Huerter have a poison-pill restriction.
Capela cannot be traded because of the extension he signed before the season.
Players with trade value: Danilo Gallinari ($21.5M, UFA 2022).
Gallinari has $5 million guaranteed in 2022-23.

Long-term salary: John Collins ($23M, Player 2025) and Bogdan Bogdanovic ($18M, Player 2023).
Draft capital: Atlanta controls all of its future first-round picks. The Hawks are owed a first-round pick from the Thunder in 2022, but only if it falls outside of the top 14. The Hawks also have a first-round pick from Charlotte that is top-18 projected in 2022, top-16 in 2023 and top-14 in 2024 and 2025.
The finances: The Hawks are $2.4 million below the luxury tax this season. Because of the extensions to Young and Huerter, Atlanta could be a tax team in 2022-23.
Boston Celtics

Front-office discussions: Do we try to add a superstar using the contracts of Marcus Smart, Josh Richardson and draft picks? Will ownership sign off on using the $17.2 million trade exception, which would result in a significant financial luxury tax penalty? What is the upside of our recent first-round picks not named Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown?
Off the board: Jayson Tatum ($37.1M, Player 2025), Robert Williams III ($3.7M, UFA 2026) and Marcus Smart ($14.3M, UFA 2026).

Draft capital: The Celtics control all their future first-round picks.
The finances: The Celtics are $850K over the luxury tax. They have three trade exceptions of $17.2 million, $9.8 million and $6.9 million. Boston is projected to be over the luxury tax in 2022-23.
Brooklyn Nets

Front-office discussions: Do we entertain extending Kyrie Irving? What are the financial implications of using either the $11.5 million or $6.2 million trade exception? Acquiring a player earning $10 million would cost an additional $56 million toward the luxury tax. Who is expendable if we need to open up a roster spot?
Off the board: Kevin Durant ($42M, UFA 2025) and James Harden ($44.3M, Player 2022).

The finances: The Nets are $35.3M over the luxury tax. They have $11.5 million and $6.3 million trade exceptions. Brooklyn is $16.5 million over the tax in 2022-23.
Charlotte Hornets

Front-office discussions: What is the window with this roster? Do we stay patient with this team, or is there a trade that can put us in the top six of the East? The Hornets have the fifth-youngest roster in the NBA.
Off the board: LaMelo Ball ($8.2M, RFA 2024) and Terry Rozier ($17.9M).
Rozier cannot be traded until Jan. 30.

Oubre has $5M guaranteed in 2022-23; Plumlee has $4.3M guaranteed; Smith has no guaranteed money.
Long-term salary: Gordon Hayward ($29.9M, UFA 2024).
Draft capital: The Hornets owe the Knicks a first-round pick that is top-18 protected in 2022. The protection drops to top 16 in 2023 and then top 14 after that. They are allowed to trade a first-round pick, but only two years after the pick to New York is conveyed.
The finances: The Hornets are $19.7 million under the luxury tax this season. They have $115 million in salary for 2022-23 but only $91 million of that is guaranteed.
Chicago Bulls

Front-office discussions: Is Patrick Williams expendable if we can acquire a top level wing? Do we have enough scoring off the bench? Is there a stretch-4 who fits into our $5 million trade exception (with the cost of going into the tax)? Should we open up an extra roster spot and waive Matt Thomas before the Jan. 7 guarantee deadline?
Off the board: Zach LaVine ($19.5M, UFA 2022), DeMar DeRozan ($26M, UFA 2024) and Alfonzo McKinnie ($1.0M, UFA 2023).

Caruso has $3 million guaranteed in 2024-25.
Draft capital: The Bulls owe the Magic a top-four protected first-round pick in 2023. The protection drops to top three in 2024, and becomes a 2026 second-round pick if it hasn't conveyed by then. Two years after the condition to Orlando is met, the Bulls will send San Antonio a first-round pick (the earliest can be 2025). They are not allowed to trade any of their own first-round picks outright, unless the protection is lifted. The Bulls are allowed to trade the 2022 first they received from Portland as part of the Lauri Markkanen trade. The first is lottery-protected until 2028.
The finances: Chicago is $2.9M below the luxury tax this season. The Bulls have only $100 million in committed salary in 2022-23 but are over the salary cap due to the $29.3 million Zach LaVine free-agent hold.
Cleveland Cavaliers

Front-office discussions: Should we explore trade options for the injured Collin Sexton?

The finances: The Cavaliers are $3.6 million below the luxury tax this season. They have $108 million in committed salary for next season. Cleveland has a $4.2 million trade exception.
Dallas Mavericks

Front-office discussions: Is there a player who fits into our $10.9 million trade exception? Which current player can be waived if there is a player available in the buyout market? Do we lift the protection (top 10) on the 2023 pick owed to New York and move a future first-round pick if there is a trade that helps now?
Off the board: Luka Doncic ($10.2M, Player 2027).
Players with trade value: Dorian Finney-Smith ($4M, UFA 2022) and Jalen Brunson ($1.8M, UFA 2022).

Draft capital: The Mavericks owe New York a first-round pick that is top-10 protected in 2023, 2024 or 2025. The Mavericks can trade a first, two years after the pick to New York is conveyed. The earliest would be 2025.
The finances: The Mavericks are $16.3 million below the luxury tax this season. They have a $10.9 million trade exception from the Josh Richardson trade. Dallas has $138 million in salary for 2022-23, $7 million below the tax.

The finances: The Nuggets are $1.4 million below the luxury tax. Because of the recent extensions of Porter and Gordon, Denver will be in the luxury tax next offseason.
Detroit Pistons

Indiana Pacers

Front-office discussions: What is the blueprint for rebuilding this roster? Is it time to explore splitting up Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner? Los Angeles Lakers

Front-office discussions: Who is the odd man out (DeAndre Jordan or Kent Bazemore) if we want to open up another roster spot? Do we explore packaging Kendrick Nunn and one of the minimum players? Memphis Grizzlies

Front-office discussions: Who is expendable if we want to add a second star? Should we play the waiting game again until the offseason?
