Trade grades: Will Tyler Ennis help Lakers' backcourt?

The deal

Lakers get: Guard Tyler Ennis

Rockets get: Guard Marcelo Huertas

Houston Rockets: C+

According to ESPN's Calvin Watkins, the Rockets will release Huertas, whose $1.6 million salary for 2017-18 is non-guaranteed. Since Ennis was in the final season of his contract, that means the only real impact from Houston's standpoint is creating an extra $250K in cap space based on the difference between the two players' salaries this season. (Yes, the Rockets create a roster spot, but they could have done the same by simply waiving Ennis instead of trading him.)

I'm not sure $250,000 will make any difference as compared to the $3.3 million Houston could already offer buyout candidates thanks to the K.J. McDaniels trade, but I suppose it can't possibly hurt either.

Los Angeles Lakers: C+

Having already dealt Lou Williams to the Rockets earlier this week, the Lakers may have some minutes open at backup point guard. If so, taking a look at the 22-year-old Ennis makes more sense than playing Huertas, who is 33.

Ennis has yet to be effective at any point in his NBA career and currently sports a 4.1 PER in the 196 minutes he's played this season, so this is a serious flyer. But if Ennis continues to struggle, the Lakers owe him nothing beyond this season, so there's no real downside from their standpoint.
