Frankie Edgar out of UFC 218 title fight against Max Holloway

Featherweight title challenger Frankie Edgar has been forced out of a scheduled title fight against Max Holloway at UFC 218 on Dec. 2 in Detroit.

Edgar took to Instagram on Wednesday to say he's off the card.

According to Brazilian news outlet Combate, Edgar suffered a facial injury.

The UFC has not yet announced Edgar's withdrawal, or whether Holloway (18-3) will remain on the card. The 145-pound bout is scheduled to headline the pay-per-view event.

Holloway, of Waianae, Hawaii, is riding an 11-fight win streak. He won the title by knocking out Jose Aldo in the third round in June.

As far as potential replacements for Edgar, the UFC has a five-round fight between ranked featherweights Cub Swanson and Brian Ortega scheduled the following week, Dec. 9, in Fresno, California. There is also a fight scheduled for Dec. 16 between Aldo and Ricardo Lamas.

A heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Francis Ngannou is scheduled to co-headline UFC 218.
