Mumbai City FC 1 -0 Mohammedan SC
Mumbai City FC had to dig deep to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over 10-man Mohammedan SC.
Despite playing with a numerical advantage for nearly an hour after Mohammed Irshad's red card in the 35th minute, the Islanders struggled to break through until Vikram Partap Singh's 49th-minute strike sealed the hard-fought win.
The win extended the Islanders' dominance in Kolkata, where they've now won in seven of their last ten matches, drawing twice. In contrast, Mohammedan SC's home woes continued, with the team yet to register a win in six matches this season.
The game began with Mumbai City FC asserting their control, probing the Mohammedan SC defense with relentless possession. The turning point came in the 35th minute when Irshad received his second yellow card for a rash tackle on Brandon Fernandes, leaving the hosts down to 10 players.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mohammedan SC managed to keep the scoreline intact going into halftime. The visitors came out stronger in the second half, taking advantage of the extra space. Vikram Partap capitalised on a fumble by Bhaskar Roy.
The ball fell to Vikram at the edge of the box, and he unleashed a powerful left-footed shot into the bottom corner, giving Mumbai City FC the decisive lead.
Mohun Bagan 3-2 Kerala Blasters
Mohun Bagan Super Giant beat Kerala Blasters 3-2 to register their fifth consecutive home win and cement their top spot in the league. They now have have 26 points from 11 matches with the help of eight victories and two draws to be at the top of table.
Kerala Blasters FC opened the game on an assertive note, with their frontline duo of Noah Sadaoui and Jesus Jimenez testing the Mohun Bagan defence within the first five minutes.
The opening goal came from the hosts in the 33rd minute though, as Asish Rai unleashed a powerful shot from distance that was stopped by Sachin, but the rebound fell in Jamie Maclaren's path, who comfortably slotted it into the bottom left corner.
Jimenez took matters in his own hands in the 51st minute, and Adrian Luna simultaneously helped him by pressing high, helping the visitors recover possession. Jimenez didn't take too much time on the ball, hammering it into the bottom left corner from the outside of the 18-yard box upon taking a quick, deft touch and equalising the scores.
In the 77th minute, the visitors got a late advantage via a set piece where Milos Drincic was placed perfectly to drill the ball into the high centre of the goal
That opened the floodgates from Bagan as Jason Cummings came off the bench in the 80th minute. His partnership with Dimitrios Petratos has been lethal upfront and Saturday was no different, with the latter squaring up a pass for Cummings deep inside the box that was netted into the bottom left corner by the striker to bring the scores back to level terms in the 86th minute.
In the added time of the second half, Kerala Blasters defence was unable to clear their lines after a corner and Alberto Rodriguez, placed outside the 18-yard area, trusted his instincts to launch a shot into the bottom left corner to bag their third goal of the night for a win.
Bengaluru FC 2 - 2 FC Goa
Bengaluru FC effected a late comeback to clinch a point as they played out a 2-2 draw against FC Goa, extending their unbeaten streak on at home to seven matches this season, winning five games and drawing twice.
FC Goa were ahead 2-0 with goals from Sandesh Jhingan (7th minute) and Sahil Tavora (66th) but Bengaluru FC rallied with strikes from Ryan Williams (71st) and Jorge Pereyra Diaz (83rd) at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
For the initial 10 minutes, FC Goa attempted to set the tone for the match. They pressed high up, recovered possession, and earned set-pieces to assert their dominance in the game. Jhingan, surrounded by a host of Bengaluru FC players, showed tremendous aerial ability to jump and head the ball into the bottom left corner to open the scoring.
However, Bengaluru FC soon gained control of the proceedings. Their offence was spearheaded by talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri, who made an ambitious attempt at goal from a fair distance outside of the box early on, just one of the many chances the host created. Despite Bengaluru FC's repeated efforts to trouble FC Goa from distance, it was Sahil Tavora who notched a strike from outside of the box in the 66th minute to double the Gaurs' lead.
They quickly struck back though, as Williams cut the deficit in the 71st minute with a brilliant finish off a through ball by Vinith Venkatesh, who came on as a substitute for Harsh Patre in the 57th minute. Jorge Pereyra Diaz too came off the bench for Bengaluru FC in the 57th minute, replacing Mendez. His introduction added firepower in the final third for the home side, and the move paid off when he slotted home a timely pass by Roshan Singh in the 83rd minute to draw the scores level.
Jamshedpur FC 2 - 1 Punjab FC
(Siverio 45'+4, 84'; Vidal 46') Javier Siverio was the star turn on the night as he bagged a brace to give Jamshedpur a solid 2-1 win over high-flying Punjab FC. The win sees them draw level on the table, with Punjab just ahead at 5th on a superior Goal Difference (+6 vs -5)
The first half was a scrappy affair with not much to separate the two sides till Siverio pounced on a lovely, cushioned header from Javi Hernandez to half-volley the ball home for the opener in the fourth minute of added time at the end of the first half. Punjab FC responded inside a minute of the restart with Ezequiel Vidal putting the finishing touches on a superb run and cross from Luka Majcen. The game opened up after that and both sides had their moments but it was substitute Nikhil Barla's superb cross that teed up Siverio for a simple finish for the winner.
East Bengal FC 1 - 2 Odisha FC
(Lalchungnunga 53 - Jerry Mawihmingthanga 56', Hugo Boumous 81')
Odisha FC climbed to third in the table after a late 2-1 win over ten-man East Bengal, after the controversial sending off of Jeakson Singh put East Bengal on the backfoot for much of the game.
The hosts and the visitors traded chances in the first half, although Odisha came closest with Isak Ralte and Hugo Boumous hitting the bar. East Bengal's fortunes took a bad turn in the 43rd minute, when Jeakson Singh was sent off for a second yellow card after catching Diego Mauricio with his elbow, but replays showed it was an erroneous decision.
However, the ten men were the ones to take the lead early in the second half - when Lalchungnunga gave East Bengal the lead with a composed finish after a scramble in the box following a corner, as Amrinder Singh made a mistake. The joy did not last for long, as Odisha were level almost immediately. Isak Ralte won the ball off Mahesh Singh, and played Jerry Mawihmingthanga into the box on the right and he sliced an attempted cross into the net to make it 1-1 in the 56th minute.
Odisha ended the contest in the 81st minute after Hugo Boumous gave them the lead. Saviour Gama took a quick throw-in on the left touchline and sent Diego Mauricio clear, with the Odisha forward skipping past Anwar Ali before cutting the ball back to the onrushing Boumous, who stroked the ball into the net with a powerful finish. Odisha saw out the rest of the match with ease, confirming all three points as they climbed to third in the table, while East Bengal languished in 11th.
Chennaiyin FC 1 - 0 Hyderabad FC
(Irfan Yadwad 5')
Owen Coyle made a major tweak to his formation, going to 3-5-2 against Hyderabad as he looked to end a streak of four winless games, and it paid off early. Irfan Yadwad, playing as one of the two up top, ran off his marker, onto a through ball from Lukas Brambilla and slotted him (albeit not cleanly) to give Chennaiyin the lead in the fifth minute.
That was the only goal of a game that had Chennaiyin had the better of, with 14 shots to 8 and 1.06 xG to 0.53 despite Hyderabad having 57% of the ball. A late red card to Connor Shields (a second yellow for timewasting, of all things) will annoy Coyle, though, as he prepares to take on defending champions Mumbai City in ten days time.
Chennaiyin have now climbed to seventh, behind NEUFC only on GD (though the latter have a game in hand) while Hyderabad remain in 12th.
