India beat Malaysia 4-0 in women's Asian Champions Trophy opener

Sangita Kumari led the way with a brace as India secured a dominant 4-0 win over Malaysia on the opening day of the women's Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, Bihar on Monday. Preeti Dubey and Udita Duhan also got their names on the scoresheet, as India negotiated a fairly feeble Malaysian test with a reasonable degree of comfort.

However, coach Harendra Singh will be disappointed by some of the attacking play on show, and also India's conversion from penalty corners, which was dismal, as they converted only three out of 15 opportunities from penalty corners.

Sangita gave India the lead in the first auarter, after a penalty corner from which India first fluffed their lines, as Deepika didn't quite time the drag well enough. However Lalremsiami and Deepika combined to keep the move alive, before Deepika's reverse hit led to a goalmouth scramble that Sangita was alive to for a tap in from close range.

India huffed and puffed for the rest of the first half, even though they had chances, particularly from penalty corners. They eventually went into half-time just a solitary goal ahead.

Eventually though, India's quality told in the third quarter. They scored twice in that 15-minute spell, both times through penalty corners. First up, Navneet's hit from the second battery was calmly deflected in by Preeti Dubey, and then just a minute later, Udita slammed a superb strike from the edge of the D that gave the Malaysian goalkeeper no chance.

Sangita completed a good evening's work for India with the pick of the goals on the day. She was picked out in space around the 25-yard line with a pass from deep defence. She controlled it well, weaved past a couple of defenders, and then struck a fierce reverse hit after jinking to her left, leaving the Malaysian goalkeeper with no chance.

Earlier in the day, Japan drew 2-2 with Korea, and China put 15 goals past Thailand. It's a quick turnaround for India, as they face Korea on Tuesday in their second match of the tournament.
