India's third and final match of their 2023 FIH Hockey World Cup Pool stage at Bhubaneswar saw India beat Wales 4-2.
After England beat Spain 4-0 earlier in the day, India needed a win by an eight goal margin to top the group, but never came close to hitting their target.
The finish held importance because only the team that finishes first gets an automatic qualification spot, with the teams finishing second and third set to face those that finish third and second (respectively) in Pool C. This means, India now play New Zealand on Sunday January 19 in their crossover round.
