Clutch Gaming won a tiebreaker to capture the top seed for Group A play on Friday on Day 3 of the play-in stage of the League of Legends World Championships in Berlin.
The North American squad Clutch finished in a three-way tie with Unicorns of Love and MAMMOTH in group play with a 2-2 record. Unicorns knocked out MAMMOTH in the first tiebreaker, then fell to Clutch in the second.
Heading into their final match of group play, MAMMOTH was 2-1 and would have secured the top seed with a win over Clutch Gaming. But their loss created the three-way tie, and MAMMOTH from Australia couldn't overcome Unicorns of Love in the tiebreaker despite beating them twice in group play.
Earlier in the day, Unicorns beat Clutch in group play, but the tiebreaker win left Clutch as the No. 1 seed from its group, with Unicorns of Love still alive as the second seed.
In less-dramatic Group B play, each team went 1-1 on the day, which was good enough for Splyce, which earned the top seed from their group with a 3-1 record. Isurus Gaming, which lost to Splyce on Friday, secured the second seed at 2-2.
DetonationN FocusMe, with a 1-3 group-play record, was knocked out.
The double-round-robin play-in stage has one more day remaining, with Groups C and D back in action Saturday.
The top two teams per group advance to Round 2, with the first-place teams from the group stage each facing a second-place team in best-of-five matches. The winners advance to the main event, which begins Oct. 12.
The Worlds will conclude Nov. 10.
