Only one set of games would grace the stage on Wednesday at OGN Overwatch APEX in Seoul, South Korea. With LW Blue withdrawing from APEX on short notice due to commitments made with the upcoming Overwatch League, its opponent X6-Gaming took a free win. Meta Athena, on the other hand, suffered a massive defeat at the hands of MVP Space.
Map 1: Oasis (Control)
Map 2: King's Row (Assault/Escort)
Map 3: Temple of Anubis (Assault)
Oasis should have been the biggest hope for any and all Meta Athena fans, especially after the disappointing loss it suffered at the hands of RunAway earlier in the tournament. While it went in the favor of MVP Space, it was by far the closest map in the entire set. Ha "Sayaplayer" Jeong-woo did his best to carry Meta Athena to a win but it wasn't enough.
King's Row was more or less the same story, with Sayaplayer performing phenomenally, but it still wasn't enough to bring his team together. Meta Athena no longer looks like the team that once flawlessly executed innovative plans, and it has a lot to do with the fact that it no longer builds team compositions around Choi "Hoon" Jae-hoon's Zarya. Sayaplayer's McCree, Soldier and Tracer are all incredible but it means nothing if he doesn't have a team that's capable of pulling together to back him up. After King's Row, Temple of Anubis easily went to MVP Space.
Many questions were asked about whether or not MVP Space would truly be a force to be reckoned with. It took down Lunatic-Hai and now Meta Athena, so for now it seems to be the real deal. And yet, the question needs to be further explored so as the tournament goes on, many should watch in anticipation as MVP Space proves its mettle in APEX.
