India at CWG 2022 Day 3 as it happened: Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli win gold with Games record

Another successful day for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 thanks to weightlifting. Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli won gold medals in their respective categories to make it six medals for India at the Games, all coming from weightlifting.

Jeremy had to endure excruciating pain on his way to a sensational gold medal winning performance. The reigning Youth Olympic champion first bettered the snatch mark with a successful 140kg attempt and then lifted 160kg in clean and jerk to take his aggregate to 300kg, which is a new Games record in the men's 67kg competition.

Achinta also lived up to his top billing as he clinched India's third gold. Favourite to win the event, debutant Achinta lifted 313kg (143kg+170kg) to grab the gold at NEC Arena. This is also a new Games record.

Also on Sunday, Indian men's hockey team dominated Ghana and won their opening match 11-0.

They were relentless in their attacks and completely controlled the proceedings from start to finish. India converted six out of 13 penalty corners they earned in the match. Vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh (11th, 35th, 53rd) scored a hat trick, while Abhishek (second minute), Shamsher Singh (14th), Akashdeep Singh (20th), Jugraj Singh (22nd, 43rd), Nilakanta Sharma (38th), Varun Kumar (39th) and Mandeep Singh (48th) were the other scores.

Continuing his impressive run, swimmer Srihari Nataraj advanced to the finals of the men's 50m backstroke event. The 21-year-old clocked 25.38 to emerge the eighth fastest swimmer across semifinals to make his second final of the Birmingham Games.

In lawn bowls, Indian women's fours team qualified for the semifinals after defeating Norfolk Island. The team of Lovely Choubey (lead), Pinki (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip) won 17-9 in the quarterfinal match. The four will play against New Zealand in the semifinal on Monday.

In badminton, India beat South Africa 3-0 to progress to the semifinals where they will face Singapore on Monday.
