Crucial conversations on social justice are more important than ever. To help further this important dialogue, The Undefeated will host Breaking Barriers, a virtual conversation on racial equality with Bank of America and Boys and Girls Clubs of America on Friday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. ET.
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Negro Leagues, which were created for those who were denied the opportunity to participate in the Major Leagues because of the color of their skin until Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Earlier this month, ESPN and Major League Baseball commemorated the centennial anniversary by participating in the Tip Your Cap initiative to show their respect to the pioneers who faced significant social adversity to play the game of baseball. Jackie Robinson Day - celebrated annually on April 15 - was rescheduled to Aug. 28 because of the postponement of the Major League Baseball season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To commemorate and reflect on these significant moments on Jackie Robinson Day, Breaking Barriers will explore the intersection of baseball and race, along with the current role sports can play in furthering the dialogue of social justice and racial equality across the United States. ESPN and The Undefeated Columnist and Commentator Clinton Yates will moderate the virtual event, which will feature Major League Baseball Vice President of Baseball Development Del Matthews, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick and Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Chris Archer.
"We are at a reflection point in the country - conversations on racial equity are crucial, and when put in the context of sports, it helps young people to better understand, reflect and voice their concerns and ideas," said Kevin Martinez, ESPN vice president of Corporate Citizenship. "Companies play a critical role in helping to drive social justice forward, and we're proud to team up with Bank of America to host this courageous conversation with the Boys & Girls Clubs."
