11:24pm LSG continue to have the upper hand over MI in the IPL - this is their sixth win in seven matches. And this one was a victory completed by their bowlers. This win would be sweeter considering none of Pooran and Pant came to the party. When Hardik walked away with a five-for in the innings break, it seemed MI could gun the target down. They almost would have done it if not for the thrifty spell from Rathi, who gave away just 21 runs and picked up the wicket of an on-song Dhir.
Off-pace short balls worked well for MI. They picked up 5 for 30 in the 24 such deliveries they bowled. And so to expect LSG take a similar route wouldn't have been outlandish. But they stuck to their death-bowling plans of aiming for the yorker from quite early, which worked for them. Suryakumar played a blinder, had he stayed for any longer, the result could have been different. Tilak's struggles didn't help MI. Thakur's penultimate over was a theatre in death-overs bowling. Avesh only completing the task that was made easy after that. Superb win for LSG, one that should give them immense confidence. And what about MI? Deflating for sure, let's find out more at the presentation.
Hardik Pandya, MI captain: "Disappointing when you lose. If we had to be honest, in the field, 10-12 runs we gave too much. We fell short in the end. [On his bowling] Always enjoyed my bowling. I don't have many options but I read the wicket and use smarter options. I never go for wickets but try to make batters make mistakes. Today was one of those days. As a batting unit, we fell short. We win as a team, we lose as a team. I take full ownership. [Tilak retired out] We needed some hits, he was not getting those. In cricket some of those days come, when you try but they don't come. Just play good cricket, I like to keep it simple. Take better calls, be smart in bowling, take chances in batting. It is a long tournament, you get a couple of wins and get into the rhythm."
Shardul Thakur: "There's always pressure when you are bowling the penultimate or the last over. Avesh bowled brilliantly at the last. That's what we get paid for. Happy to be in the winning side and executing correctly. Tricky surface. Sometimes slower ones worked, but we saw boundaries being hit off slower ones. Eventually came down to the better yorkers. We do see what's happened in the first half. But the pitch changes over the course of the game and gets better at night. It is up to the bowlers to adjust his lines and variations. Need to have a lot in our kitty to adjust. [On Rathi] He is a phenomenal bowler and a bit of character. We need such players who do not be afraid to express. That's the biggest strength, we saw he did well in the practice games as well. He is the surprise in the IPL. [Red-soil vs black-soil pitch] Red ball the bounce is batter, you can trust the bounce. On black soil, you need better skills as a batter."
Rishabh Pant, LSG captain: "The wicket is playing well and we need to figure out what's working for us and what not. We wanted a different kind of wicket before and then we decided whatever is on offer, we play on that. When you get a good start, you are always ahead of the game. The idea is to play according to the situation. The start Marsh gave helped lower middle capitalise on that. Mentally tough game, they did not lose a lot of wickets and kept on going. Bu we kept our calm and finished the game. [Thakur] has been amazing for us, he has been an amazing pick. Hope he continues. [Rathi] one of our leading bowlers. The way he keeps calm in tough situation, helps us."
Digvesh Rathi, Player of the Match: "I am really enjoying it. My bowling is such that I like to take wickets. I saw Sunil Narine bowl and since then I like bowling. I want to make my mindset more attacking like Sunil Narine. Like he takes pressure for the team. [Choice of ball for Dhir dismissal] The over before that, I asked Rishabh whether we should have midwicket or not. We did not have the midwicket, so he looked to play there and was bowled."
The win takes LSG to four points and to sixth on the points table. They next go to Eden Gardens to take on KKR while MI head home to Mumbai to face RCB. That is all we have from Lucknow tonight. Ekanth's full report will be up here soon. It is a double-header Saturday tomorrow. Do join us for all the action. Till then, on behalf of Sudeep, Ranjith and Ashish, this is Sudarshanan bidding you goodbye. Good night, take care!
This is LSG's match. And yet they take time to set the field. Both Pant and Avesh seem to be suggesting different moves to the fielders
14 off 3, LSG 71% favourites
16 off 5, LSG 69% favourites. Avesh takes time to get his field right
Huge conference in the middle for LSG. Avesh and Pant discuss field positions. But they haven't got through their overs in time, so they can have only four out in the deep - all of them on the off side for Hardik
