9:33pm Bangladesh don't even last the first over of the day! All it took was one ball from Southee to bowl Bangladesh out for 310. So sure was he of trapping the last batter in front, that he immediately signalled for the review and was proved right. Southee has asked for a light roller for New Zealand's batting innings. A quick turnaround between innings, about ten minutes. Do stay around.

9:28am It is quite sunny. A sparse crowd like yesterday. The umpires are making their way out. New Zealand players break away from their huddle and jog out. The last pair of Bangladesh batters walk out to the middle. How much can they stretch the score hereon?

9:25am Pitch report The surface looked good. Wasn't the easiest place to bat. The bounce was uneven yesterday. "There were cracks appearing on day one, but they have widened," observes HD Ackerman. He adds that those could widen further as the game goes on. He looks at the area outside off for left-handers and says it is an area of concern for them due to the roughness in that patch, thanks in no small measures to the New Zealand fast bowlers bowling from over the wicket and Ajaz Patel exploiting that against the Bangladesh lefties.

9:20am Glenn Phillips: "When you lose the toss, you can't really change the outcome of that. We would have taken 310 for 9 on most days. It actually did. We knew it would have been a slog like good old days. [The pitch] It turned a little bit but the odd one skid as well. [On his first Test wicket] I was visualising a length ball chipped to cover, but not one off a juicy full toss. I'll take whatever comes. [On Jamieson] Kyle could bowl a lot worse and take a lot of wickets on another day. Unfortunately for him, a few balls were landing in the middle of nowhere. It will be a hard graft. Bangladesh showed patience, other than Shanto. I think we have guys who can do that. It's about patience and double patience."

9:07am Glenn Phillips had never bowled in a Test match before. In fact, he is playing just his second Test. And admittedly, Phillips the batter would have tried to hit Phillips the bowler out of the attack. Bangladesh tried that. They lost four wickets to Phillips' offspin. He is trying to lose the tag of 'wicketkeeper-batter' and be a more regular contributor with the ball. He now hopes this four-for - with a chance of converting it to a five-wicket haul today - goes a long way in changing the perception.

4:49pm That's that for the opening day. Bad light has meant that stumps have been called. The visibility was perhaps an issue in the previous over Jamieson bowled and spinners could continue. But now, that is that for the opening day. Bangladesh can take solace from the fact that they have not folded on the opening day.

Bangladesh have made good first use of the surface that looks good for batting, but is a bit on the slower side. They would be kicking themselves for not capitalising further. Like how Mahmudul showed during his patient knock of 86. He bided his time, put the bad balls away and largely tackled the spin challenge well. But the rest of the batters - save for Shanto and Mominul - did not apply themselves.

Phillips was the unlikely hero with the ball for New Zealand. Playing just in his second Test, he bowled for the first time and picked up four wickets to quell hopes of a tall Bangladesh total. He varied his flight, bowled more on the slower side and used the bowling crease quite well. He did struggle with the second new ball but by then his effect was telling.

Bangladesh will look back at the day as a missed chance. A chance to post a taller score to make New Zealand uneasy given the tourists have to bat last. New Zealand will quietly pat their back for having triggered a downslide from 180 for 2. What does the second day have in store for us? Plenty to look forward to.
