4.25pm: A real fighting effort from Ireland, who were effectively 162 for 7 during the morning session but chiselled away the deficit through a pair of lower-order 80s - eventually getting enough on the board to avert an innings defeat. Andy McBrine finished 86 not out, a Test best score, but with James McCollum nursing a busted ankle he was left high and dry; Mark Adair also made a CB, whacking 88 from 76. Josh Tongue was the standout bowler for England, with a five-for on debut. Next it'll be over to the England openers to finish this off toot sweet

Good evening, welcome back to the McBrine Supremacy. The Ireland allrounder is pretty much the dictionary definition of "nuggety" and he's produced a knock of gold for the cause. Can he top it with a Lord's ton, and a place on the honours board? And can Ireland get far enough ahead to make England's openers sweat, in their last outing before the Ashes?

3.58pm: Ireland have made it to a delayed tea interval on the third day, which looked highly unlikely when England declared last night. They've added 141 runs in the session for the loss of two wickets, with Mark Adair and Andy McBrine's partnership enlivening a day that threatened to finish in a hurry when Tucker, Tector and Campher fell before lunch. What sort of target can they set England? Alan will be here in 15 or so to talk you through the start of the evening session.
The lesser-spotted Stuart Broad replaces Root.

Tim in Thailand: "Joe Root DID get pumped in South Africa. Port Elizabeth and he had 4-20 odd in the second innings, ending up with 4-80 odd as he tried to get his fiveâŠ." -- That's the one!
Brendan: "Is McCollum at the ground? I'm wondering if he hobbles out if McBrine is 98* and Hume gets out." -- Good question, and fair shout. By the sounds of things he would genuinely struggle even to walk to the middle... but stranger things have happened.
Now, what sort of target can Ireland set? Enough to get Crawley and Duckett sweating?
