4.20pm: Nathan Lyon limps his way back to the pavilion, as the ground rises to applaud his bravery. He could barely move but did his bit for the Australia cause, helping to add a potentially vital 15 runs on to the score. England's target is 371, a record on this ground... but right in between two of their most famous chases, against Australia at Headingley in 2019 and India at Edgbaston last year. In all, Australia lost their last eight wickets for 92 runs as England went into what was almost a fugue state of bowling bouncers. It helped claw some ground back, with the game getting away from them - although it will surely come back at them with interest during the chase. Anyway, the players are taking tea right now, and Alex will be back for the start of the fourth innings in 10

Broad to Lyon, OUT, gone, plinked to midwicket! Broad persists with the short ball to the very end and Lyon finally miscues one straight up. Safely held by Stokes, who then goes to give Lyon a pat on the back. What an extraordinary passage of play we've just seen - at a ground that has seen plenty over the years

Broad to Lyon, FOUR, short and swung away into the gap! Huge cheers from the Australians in the ground as Lyon gets his first runs, pushing the lead up further. That has clearly hurt Lyon, but he's gutsing this out

Tea imminent, but won't be taken yet with Australia nine down

Tongue to Starc, no run, Tongue does now pitch one up, full and wide of the stumps. Starc swings wildly but can't connect... and Lyon will once again be on strike for the next over

"Mettle from Lyon goes a long way in giving Australia a mental edge," reckons Aaron

Tongue to Starc, no run, short and pulled away to deep square leg, Stokes fields... and then pulls up sharply. He gestures, as if to say 'don't worry', and then stretches off his dodgy knee

Broad to Lyon, no run, Broad continues to bang it in halfway down, Lyon swipes to deep backward square leg - and that ends one of the more unusual maidens ever bowled in Tests

"What is the ideal target? Are Aussies sacrificing too much in terms of Lyon?" Who knows, Rakib? All cricket sense has gone out of the window this afternoon...!

Broad to Lyon, no run, top-edged into the gap! Crawley and Brook are converging from deep backward square and fine leg, neither can get under it, but they do pull off some decent relay work to prevent either a boundary or a (hopped) single

Broad to Lyon, no run, back of a length, Lyon swipes at it and is left doubled over in pain. Think that's hit him amidships... but he's going to front up again

"Why is Lyon not opting for a runner?" Not allowed in international cricket anymore, SRK
