9.32pm: Joe Root walks off with his bat raised, you'd have to say it's been England's day - albeit another far-from-perfect performance with the bat. That final-wicket stand has just given the tourists a spring their step. Besides Root and Zak Crawley, there wasn't a great deal of substance the England card, while Mitchell Starc threatened to run amok once again, further burnishing his pink-ball record with 6 for 71. But Root's first hundred in Australia would give England fans plenty to cheer about in any circumstance; the next monkey on his back is 16 Tests down under without being on the winning side. He's given his side the platform here, and they'll be back to try and add a few more tomorrow morning afternoon

One of the host broadcasters (Channel 7 or Fox, I'm not sure which) has grabbed a word or two with Starc by the boundary's edge: "[Overtaking Wasim Akram] Wasim's still the pinnacle, I think he's still better. [Pink-ball mojo] Still don't know. Good day's cricket, Joe's batted well. Once that ball goes soft it's not easy to score or bowl with. Proper day's Test cricket."

"You'd love to know what value Australia put on not having to bat for 30 mins at night," muses Pompton. "I'd be concerned if they think it's worth 50 runs."
