END OF OVER:74 | 3 Runs | ENG: 325/9

- Joe Root135 (202b)
- Michael Neser14-3-43-1
- Mitchell Starc19-0-71-6
9.42pm: Right, settle down, everyone. Root's the story of the hour, and will doubtless feature strongly in Tristan Lavelette's report; you can also catch up on the day with Matt Roller's Live Report, and then stick around for more from our team at the ground. Alex and Andrew Miller will be back bright and early (depending on your timezone) for more tomorrow. Cheerio!
9.32pm: Joe Root walks off with his bat raised, you'd have to say it's been England's day - albeit another far-from-perfect performance with the bat. That final-wicket stand has just given the tourists a spring their step. Besides Root and Zak Crawley, there wasn't a great deal of substance the England card, while Mitchell Starc threatened to run amok once again, further burnishing his pink-ball record with 6 for 71. But Root's first hundred in Australia would give England fans plenty to cheer about in any circumstance; the next monkey on his back is 16 Tests down under without being on the winning side. He's given his side the platform here, and they'll be back to try and add a few more tomorrow morning afternoon
One of the host broadcasters (Channel 7 or Fox, I'm not sure which) has grabbed a word or two with Starc by the boundary's edge: "[Overtaking Wasim Akram] Wasim's still the pinnacle, I think he's still better. [Pink-ball mojo] Still don't know. Good day's cricket, Joe's batted well. Once that ball goes soft it's not easy to score or bowl with. Proper day's Test cricket."
"You'd love to know what value Australia put on not having to bat for 30 mins at night," muses Pompton. "I'd be concerned if they think it's worth 50 runs."
"Perhaps Stokes wants Aus to lose those over-rate points so that's why he didn't declare (provided England play out 80 overs). yet another moral victory I reckon," chuckles S Nagasubramani
Keeper up to the stumps
Michael Neser is back on for one is likely the final over
KyleD: "I'm so glad Root finally got a hundy down undy. Legend "
END OF OVER:73 | 6 Runs | ENG: 322/9
- Joe Root133 (200b)
- Jofra Archer31 (22b)
- Mitchell Starc19-0-71-6
- Scott Boland19-1-87-1
That might be Starc's work done for the day. Another fabulous effort from the big southpaw
Shah: "Even though we have not reached 80 over mark, still Australia are 16 over short for the day. Shouldn't that result in some kind of penalty?" Only if England manage to bat another 7-8 overs tomorrow. Teams are no longer sanctioned if they bowl a side out inside 80 overs (for those asking when referenced earlier)
Starc again
England would presumably now be happy to get to stumps nine down
END OF OVER:72 | 9 Runs | ENG: 316/9
- Jofra Archer29 (20b)
- Joe Root129 (196b)
- Scott Boland19-1-87-1
- Mitchell Starc18-0-65-6
And as the clock ticks around to 9.20pm local time, that means Australia won't have to come out and bat tonight
Fifty stand for the last wicket, and Root's first six in Australia, as it goes. Records tumbling
"Has Australia forgotten that they need fielders somewhere near Archer if they want to try to get a wicker?" grouses Anthony. Timely comment, given the previous ball
Boland continues
END OF OVER:71 | 15 Runs | ENG: 307/9
- Jofra Archer27 (17b)
- Joe Root122 (193b)
- Mitchell Starc18-0-65-6
- Scott Boland18-1-78-1
This stand now worth 43 in 26 balls, by the way
"Stokes starting to think that it's wasn't a good idea to declare at Edgbaston in 2023" Well, Tom, they did lose that game after all
"England's first 300-plus total in Australia since January 2018," notes Matt R
