COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State defensive tackle Adolphus Washington was cited for solicitation on Wednesday, putting his availability for the last game of a decorated college career in question.
A school spokesperson confirmed that the senior was charged late Wednesday night by Columbus police with a first-degree misdemeanor and is scheduled for an appearance in court on Dec. 17.
"Disciplinary action will be handled internally," the spokesperson said Thursday.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is currently out on recruiting visits and will address Washington's punishment when he returns to campus. The Buckeyes are scheduled to practice again Friday in preparation of the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame.
"I want to sincerely apologize to my family, to coach Meyer and the coaching staff, to my teammates and my friends for my lack of judgement last night and for my actions that I truly regret," Washington said in a statement. "I have wanted to be a high-character teammate, a contributor to the success of this program and, most importantly, someone my family can be proud of. I am extremely disappointed in myself, and I can honestly say I will learn from my mistake and I will accept the consequences that deservedly will come my way. And I hope that people will know that I am truly sorry and that I sincerely do apologize."
Washington was an integral member of an Ohio State defense that ranked No. 2 nationally in points allowed, contributing in almost every possible way during his final season with the program. The versatile lineman finished the year with seven tackles for loss, four sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception that he returned for a touchdown.
Washington flirted with the idea of skipping his final season of eligibility a year ago, but his decision to return coupled with his impressive output on the field appeared to bolster his case as a potential first-round NFL draft pick next spring.
