ESPN.com will catch up with a notable sports figure from yesteryear each Thursday in its "Where Are They Now?" series.
Claim to fame: Gino Torretta won the 1992 Heisman Trophy as quarterback of the Miami Hurricanes. He went 26-2 as a starter and guided Miami to the 1991 national championship. He also saw significant playing time as a redshirt freshman on the 1989 Hurricanes championship team. He was the first quarterback to win two national championships and the Heisman -- a feat since equaled by Matt Leinart and Tim Tebow.
Torretta spent several years in the NFL as a backup quarterback with the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
Catching up: Torretta, 45, lives in the Miami area with wife, Bernadette, and daughter, Aria, and still sees many former Hurricanes teammates often. He's an executive with GAMCO Investors, the CEO of Touchdown Radio Productions and an analyst for SiriusXM radio. Radio work keeps him closely connected with the college football world on a weekly basis. "I love going to college games and going into stadiums where I didn't get a chance to play," he said.
Additionally, he maintains the charitable Torretta Foundation to raise funds and awareness for the fight against ALS and is active in University of Miami alumni events.
Torretta said he cherishes the friendships he has made as part of the Heisman community to this day, getting to know everyone from the first recipient, 1935 winner Jay Berwanger, to the most recent honorees.
He has watched the children of fellow winners mature, just as they have seen his daughter grow up. He recalls preparing to step to the podium among past winners during a trophy presentation years ago when his young daughter had been sitting with him. At the last second, he realized he didn't know where she should go while he was onstage. No problem. Earl Campbell, the 1977 winner who was unable to take the podium because of back and knee problems, asked her to sit with him and watch the proceedings.
Quotable: "We're family," Torretta said of the Heisman fraternity. "We know what each other went through. It's special. It's very gratifying."
What's next? Time with loved ones and continuing to develop his business and charitable endeavors. "I have a great life and a great family. I'm pretty happy doing what I'm doing."
