Prior to the season starting, we ranked the top 50 newcomers, including both true freshmen and first-year transfers who we thought would see the field in 2023.
Without much evidence or stats to rank them, these were educated guesses on which players would make the biggest impact. Through eight weeks of the college football season, we can better see which new players are making the biggest impact for their respective teams.
We reranked the top 50 newcomers based on their performances thus far and how important they have been to their new teams. The list is a combination of Class of 2023 high school recruits in their first season and transfers who joined their new programs in the offseason.
These are the 50 first-year players who have helped their teams the most:

1. QB Shedeur Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes
Transferred from Jackson State to Colorado
Previous rank: 3
Sanders has been a huge part of Colorado's rebuild this season, and while the team has seen its fair share of ups and downs, Sanders has been consistent. He is fourth among FBS quarterbacks in passing yards (2,420) with 21 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 72.3% completion rate. He has done all of that while playing behind an offensive line that has given up 34 sacks. Sanders has been sacked more times than any other quarterback this season and has faced a 38.1% pressure rate on his drop backs. Despite the heavy pass rush he has faced, he has the seventh-best off-target percentage (6.4%) through seven games. Sanders' impact on this offense has been tremendous and he has been the best first-year transfer quarterback this season.

2. DB/WR Travis Hunter, Colorado Buffaloes
Transferred from Jackson State to Colorado
Previous rank: 1
Hunter missed three games after suffering a lacerated liver during the Buffaloes' Week 3 game against Colorado State. That hasn't stopped him, however, from being one of the most impactful transfers this season. He made an immediate impact in Week 1 against TCU, playing 146 snaps combined on offense and defense. In that win over the Horned Frogs, Hunter had an interception on defense and 11 receptions for 119 yards on offense. He had four tackles and a pass breakup against Nebraska in Week 2, to go along with three receptions for 73 yards. In his return against Stanford, Hunter had 13 receptions, 140 yards and two touchdowns and five total tackles while playing over 100 snaps.

3. WR Jamari Thrash, Louisville Cardinals
Transferred from Georgia State to Louisville
Previous rank: Unranked
Louisville's offense has been thriving under Jeff Brohm this season and Thrash has proved to be one of the best transfer receivers from this past offseason. His 639 receiving yards ranks 16th best among all FBS receivers and his six touchdown passes puts him at No. 17 overall. He's averaging 91.29 receiving yards per game and 16.38 yards per reception on 39 catches through seven games. Thrash was an All-Sun Belt receiver at Georgia State and had 12 touchdowns over three seasons from 2020 to 2022. His production this season has been a big part of Louisville's success on offense and the 6-1 start.

4. WR Keon Coleman, Florida State Seminoles
Transferred from Michigan State to Florida State
Previous rank: 21
Coleman led Michigan State in both receiving yards and touchdowns in 2022 with 798 yards and seven touchdowns. Coleman now leads Florida State in both categories as well, and through seven games has 472 yards and seven touchdowns. He's No. 14 in touchdown receptions among all FBS receivers and has been a big part of Florida State's 7-0 start. He has also shown a knack for big plays in big moments. In the season-opening win against LSU, Coleman had 122 yards and three touchdowns. He had 86 yards and two touchdowns against Clemson, including the game-winning score in overtime.

5. WR Xavier Weaver, Colorado Buffaloes
Transferred from USF to Colorado
Previous rank: Unranked
Weaver had a good career at USF, bringing in 1,735 receiving yards and eight touchdowns over four seasons, but wasn't a national name. He transferred to Colorado and now leads the team with 631 receiving yards on 50 catches. He's tied for most receiving touchdowns on the team with four and is averaging 90.14 receiving yards per game. He's ranked 19th among all FBS receivers in total receiving yards despite the fact that Colorado has five other players with 200 or more receiving yards this season.

6. S Caleb Downs, Alabama Crimson Tide
ESPN 300 No. 11 overall recruit
Previous rank: 26
Downs was the No. 11 recruit overall in the 2023 class and, because of his size, skill level and talent, there was a strong chance that Downs would contribute this season. He has more than contributed. Downs, who has played 441 snaps on defense, leads the team in tackles (63) and interceptions (2). He also has a pass breakup and a forced fumble through eight games. His 63 tackles are fourth most for all FBS defensive backs while ingraining himself in Alabama's defense.

7. QB TJ Finley, Texas State Bobcats
Transferred from Auburn to Texas State
Previous rank: Unranked
Finley is a name that might have been lost in the transfer mix, going from LSU to Auburn and now playing for Texas State. But with Finley at the helm this season, Texas State has gone 5-2, including a win over a Power 5 team in Baylor. Finley is No. 17 among all quarterbacks in passing yards with 1,941 yards and has 14 passing touchdowns with three interceptions. He has also been accurate, posting an 83% catchable pass attempt rate. Finley's team hasn't been in the national spotlight, but he is quietly putting up impressive numbers and has been instrumental in his team's success.

8. QB Sam Hartman, Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Transferred from Wake Forest to Notre Dame
Previous rank: 2
Hartman was widely considered one of the best transfer quarterbacks this offseason based on his career up to this point. He was also joining a Notre Dame team that badly needed help at quarterback and a veteran presence that could help guide the offense. So far, Hartman has done just that for the Irish. Through eight games, Hartman has thrown for 1,838 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions. Through eight games during the 2022 season, Notre Dame quarterbacks threw for 1,571 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Hartman has helped improve on most offensive categories this season and is a big part of why Notre Dame is 6-2, and made big plays in Notre Dame's biggest wins - Duke and USC. In that win against the Trojans, Notre Dame scored 48 points, the fourth-most against an AP top-10 opponent since 1936. That wasn't all from Hartman, but he has provided the Irish with stability and consistency at the position.

9. WR Zachariah Branch, USC Trojans
ESPN 300 No. 7 overall recruit
Previous rank: 27
Branch was a five-star prospect in the 2023 class and was deemed as an excellent fit for Lincoln Riley's offense given his playmaking ability, explosiveness and speed. He has not disappointed thus far, making an impact on offense and special teams. Branch has dealt with an injury that limited his participation in two games, but he still has 197 yards receiving and two touchdowns on offense. On special teams, he has 303 punt return yards and a touchdown, as well as 310 kickoff return yards and a touchdown. He showed off his versatility in Week 1 against San Jose State when he had 58 yards receiving and a touchdown, along with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

10. OL Francis Mauigoa, Miami Hurricanes
ESPN 300 No. 6 overall recruit
Previous rank: 34
It's often difficult for true freshman offensive linemen to start in their first season because there can be a gap in strength and knowledge of the position. Mauigoa, however, has stepped in and played as if he has been on a college campus for multiple years. He was a five-star prospect in the 2023 class and had offers from Alabama, Georgia, USC, Tennessee, Ohio State, Oklahoma and plenty of other big schools. He has played 370 snaps this season, which is third most among the Miami offensive linemen, and has allowed just one sack.

11. LB Jamil Muhammad, USC Trojans

Michigan was replacing Olu Oluwatimi, who was a transfer prior to the 2022 season and won the Rimington Trophy with Michigan as the nation's best center. Nugent has stepped in and been the starter from Day 1, playing in 355 snaps at center for the Wolverines. On 163 pass blocking snaps, Nugent has allowed just one pressure and has blown just one block on 192 run block snaps. The 65 tackles have him tied for 20th among all FBS linebackers and while he has played 447 snaps this season for the Hawkeyes, Jackson has missed just three tackles all season. The Iowa offense is still a work in progress, but the defense has been stifling opposing teams and Jackson has played a part in that success.
