The best available 2021 college football recruits by position as national signing day nears

QB Jake Garcia decommitted from USC last Friday, less than two and a half weeks before the early signing period begins. Marcy Reagin

College football coaches are working to fill voids on their rosters with this current recruiting cycle in the 2021 class. There is less than a week until the early signing period starts on Wednesday, and the number of high-end prospects who are uncommitted is dwindling.

As it stands, 41 ESPN 300 recruits are uncommitted, and each position group still has some elite players who have yet to make a decision.

Here is a look at the top-ranked uncommitted recruit at each position and where his recruitment stands as we inch closer and closer to the early signing period.

Quarterback

Jake Garcia
6-foot-2, 190 pounds
Loganville, Georgia
ESPN 300 rank: 18

Three of the 29 ESPN 300 quarterbacks in this class are uncommitted, and Garcia joined that list after he recently decommitted from USC amid rumors he was reconsidering his pledge.

Garcia is originally from California but transferred to a Georgia high school to play his final season of high school football after California moved its season to the spring. Miami and Florida State are two schools that could be involved now that he has decommitted. It seems as though the Hurricanes have a lot of momentum going forward.

Running back

Camar Wheaton
5-foot-11, 195 pounds
Garland, Texas
ESPN 300 rank: 41

Five of the 13 ESPN 300 running backs are uncommitted, with Wheaton, Donovan Edwards, L.J. Johnson, Armoni Goodwin and Byron Cardwell still on the board.

Wheaton recently released his top two schools, with Alabama and Oklahoma making the cut. The Sooners have done an excellent job recruiting offensive prospects, and there is a good chance the Oklahoma staff could win the race for Wheaton.

Wide receiver

Emeka Egbuka
6-foot-1, 190 pounds
Steilacoom, Washington
ESPN 300 rank: 28

There are 53 ESPN 300 wide receivers in this class, but only six who are uncommitted. Egbuka is the No. 2 receiver behind Oklahoma commit Mario Williams Jr.

Egbuka has tried to take full advantage of his recruiting process as well, recently taking an unofficial visit to Oklahoma, which is one of his three finalists (Ohio State and Washington are the other two). The Buckeyes have been thought to be the leader, but his recent visit to Oklahoma has some thinking the Sooners have brought themselves back into contention. He will announce his decision on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and will sign in the early signing period.

Interior offensive lineman

Bryce Foster
6-foot-5, 330 pounds
Katy, Texas
ESPN 300 rank: 144

There are 20 ESPN 300 interior linemen in this class, three of whom are uncommitted. Foster is one of the more sought-after linemen left and has announced a top list of LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Foster is planning to announce his decision on Dec. 18 and will sign his national letter of intent in the early signing period. Oklahoma and Texas A&M seem to be the two schools he's focused on.

Offensive tackle

Tristan Leigh
6-foot-5, 280 pounds
Fairfax, Virginia
ESPN 300 rank: 22

There are 27 offensive tackles in the ESPN 300, and Leigh and Savion Byrd, out of Duncanville, Texas, are the only two who are uncommitted. Leigh has said he will announce his decision on Jan. 2, and his recruitment has been active.

Despite the recruiting dead period, Leigh has made his own visits, checking out campuses without having contact with coaching staffs. His top list includes Clemson, Florida, LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma. It seems LSU and Oklahoma have gotten the most attention in his recruitment, and his choice could come down to those two schools.

Athlete

Xavian Sorey
6-foot-3, 210 pounds
Bradenton, Florida
ESPN 300 rank: 20

There are 24 uncommitted ESPN 300 athletes, including Sorey, Ahmonte Watkins and Damarius McGhee. Sorey is listed as an athlete, but he's likely a linebacker at the next level.

Sorey announced a top three of Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and will announce his commitment on the first day of the early signing period on Wednesday. All three schools have been in it at some point in his recruitment so far. Georgia could end up being the landing spot, but it's tough to count out Alabama down the stretch in any recruitment.

Defensive end

Korey Foreman
6-foot-4, 265 pounds
Corona, California
ESPN 300 rank: 3

Seven of the 31 ESPN 300 defensive ends in this class are uncommitted, the most of any position group. Of those seven, the five-star Foreman is the highest ranked.

After decommitting from Clemson, he is now considering Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia, LSU and USC, among others. His recruitment has gone back and forth with Clemson leading, then Georgia seemingly gaining momentum, then LSU and USC -- something of a circle among all of the schools.

He is announcing his decision on Jan. 2. LSU and USC have had some late momentum, but a late visit to Clemson could get the Tigers into consideration as well. Foreman has people guessing right now, but as one of the top three recruits in the class, he'll be a big addition for any school.

Defensive tackle

J.T. Tuimoloau
6-foot-5, 280 pounds
Bellevue, Washington
ESPN 300 rank: 4

There are 18 ESPN 300 defensive tackles in the class and five are uncommitted, including Tuimoloau. He's a five-star recruit and also excels at basketball.

Tuimoloau is still considering Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC and Washington. He isn't likely going to make a decision or sign in this early signing period, so schools will still have January to try to recruit him.

Ohio State holds the lead for now, it seems, but with some time left in his recruitment, other programs have an opportunity to change that.

Linebacker

Terrence Lewis
6-foot-1, 200 pounds
Miami, Florida
ESPN 300 rank: 10

There are 41 linebackers -- both outside and inside -- in the ESPN 300, and four are uncommitted. Lewis only recently joined that list, as he decommitted from Tennessee on Nov. 30 after being committed to the Volunteers since April.

At one point, Miami and Texas A&M were in pursuit of Lewis, and now Auburn is in the mix. He hasn't released a full list, but the Tigers seem to be in good position as of now.

Cornerback

Ceyair Wright
6-foot, 175 pounds
Los Angeles
ESPN 300 rank: 108

Wright and Markevious Brown are the only two uncommitted cornerbacks of the 17 in the ESPN 300. Wright recently took a trip to Notre Dame and visited Michigan prior to that.

He is still considering both schools, as well as USC, Arizona State, Penn State, Texas, Nebraska and Utah, among a few others. He is planning on announcing his decision on Jan. 2 but will sign in December. It could be tough to pull him out of Los Angeles -- away from USC -- but Michigan and Notre Dame have strongly tried to make their cases.

Safety

Terrion Arnold
6-foot-2, 185 pounds
Tallahassee, Florida
Four stars

All 17 safeties in the ESPN 300 have committed. Arnold, a four-star prospect himself, is ranked just outside the top 300.

He has a top five of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M, but has said he won't make a commitment until Feb. 3. It seems Florida is in a good position, but with more than a month until he decides, that could still change.
