Boxing divisional rankings: 'Boots' Ennis, 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez move up

Jaron Ennis celebrates his fifth-round TKO victory over David Avanesyan at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Saturday. Melina Pizano/Matchroom

Jaron "Boots" Ennis retained his IBF welterweight title with a fifth-round TKO victory over David Avanesyan on Saturday at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs), from Philadelphia, was fighting for the first time in a year. His most recent fight before Saturday was a 10th-round KO of Roiman Villa in July 2023.

Against Avanesyan, Ennis had a slow start, but in the fifth round he landed a counter right hand that sent Avanesyan to the canvas. Avanesyan survived the rest of the frame, but he didn't answer the call for the sixth round.

After the fight, Ennis said he wanted to unify belts and had a particular opponent in mind.

"I want the big names, Terence Crawford," Ennis said. "Let's get it. Let's make it happen."

Crawford still has the WBO and WBA welterweight titles, but he's moving up in weight for his next fight to challenge WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov on Aug. 3.

With the victory, Ennis takes the No. 2 spot in a crowded welterweight division.

On the same night in Las Vegas, lightweight contender Raymond Muratalla defeated former junior lightweight champion Tevin Farmer by unanimous decision.

Muratalla (21-0, 16 KOs), of West Covina, California, won by scorecards of 97-92, 96-93 and 95-94. Farmer, who was deducted a point for excessive holding in the eighth round, suffered his first loss since January 2020.

Muratalla keeps his No. 8 spot in the lightweight division.

Friday night in Managua, Nicaragua, former P4P king Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez made his bantamweight debut with a 10th-round TKO victory over Rober Barrera.

Gonzalez (52-4, 42 KOs), of Managua, has won titles in four weight classes: strawweight, junior flyweight, flyweight and junior bantamweight. He dominated Barrera throughout the fight until referee Ramon Gonzalez put an end to the contest at 55 seconds of the final round.

With the victory, Gonzalez enters the 118-pound rankings at No. 4.

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.

Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
