Daniel Dubois scored an upset victory over former unified champion Anthony Joshua to retain his IBF heavyweight world title Saturday night in London in his first title defense.
Dubois dominated Joshua, scoring knockdowns in the first, third, fourth and fifth rounds before Joshua was counted out. It was an impressive performance by Dubois, who after suffering a KO loss to Oleksandr Usyk a year ago has been on a roll, scoring KO wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Joshua.
Dubois was an odds underdog (+330 by ESPN BET) but took the fight to Joshua from Round 1. Joshua never threatened Dubois, except for a well-placed right hand that had Dubois in trouble for a few seconds in Round 5 before Dubois scored the KO.
This was the second fight in which Joshua has been knocked down four times. The other was his first fight against Andy Ruiz Jr., a 2019 seventh-round TKO loss.
With the victory, Dubois moves up three spots at heavyweight to No. 3, and Joshua drops two places to No. 5.
Also on the card, Hamzah Sheeraz scored a second-round KO of Tyler Denny to retain his No. 6 spot in the middleweight division. And Joshua Buatsi defeated Willy Hutchinson by split decision to win the WBO interim light heavyweight title. Buatsi and Hutchinson retain their No. 5 and No. 10 spots, respectively, in the 175-pound division.
On Friday in Glendale, Arizona, super middleweight Jaime Munguia returned to the ring for the first time since suffering the first loss of his career -- a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez back in May -- to defeat Erik Bazinyan by 10th-round KO. It was a great performance by Munguia against an opponent that had never been stopped or even knocked down in his career.
Munguia stays at No. 3 in the 168-pound division, while Bazinyan drops one spot to No. 10.
ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
