Boxing divisional rankings: Crawford takes over another division; two new faces at heavyweight

play
Artur Beterbiev claims victory after Callum Smith's corner stops fight (1:25)

Artur Beterbiev demolishes Callum Smith in Round 7 of their bout to retain his titles in the main event of Top Rank Boxing. (1:25)

Terence Crawford made a successful junior middleweight debut, outpointing Israel Madrimov to win the WBA world title by a close unanimous decision Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) won by scorecards of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 to become a champion in a fourth weight class. Crawford, who also held titles at lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight, had to go the distance for the first time since July 2016. He was riding an 11-fight KO streak before facing Madrimov.

"Israil was a tough competitor," Crawford said after the fight. "He's really strong, he's durable, he took a lot of good shots. He got me to Round 12. He had fast feet, good rhythm upstairs, and he was strong. And he was waiting to counter me, just like I was trying to counter him."

Crawford plans to stay in the 154-pound division, but is willing to move up once again for a fight against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.

"If the money's right, we got a fight, but at the same time, he's got a fight that he's focused on [against Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14]," Crawford said of a possible fight agianst Alvarez. "I'm going to relax, enjoy this win."

With the victory, Crawford takes the No. 1 spot at junior middleweight. Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs) falls one spot to No. 4.

On the same card, heavyweight Martin Bakole scored an impressive fifth-round KO victory over Jared Anderson. Bakole, who entered the fight as the underdog, dropped Anderson three times before the fight was stopped.

Bakole (21-1, 16 KOs) moves up three spots to No. 7, while Anderson falls out of the top 10.

Also at heavyweight, former champion Andy Ruiz Jr. returned to the ring after almost a two-year layoff and fought to a majority draw against Jarrell "Big Baby" Miller in a very entertaining fight. Both enter the top 10, taking the last two spots at heavyweight.

At junior welterweight, Jose Valenzuela edged Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz in a split-decision victory to win the WBA title. Valenzuela (14-2, 9 KOs), makes his top 10 debut at No. 5, while Cruz (26-3-1, 18 KOs) falls to No. 6.

After the fight, a disappointed Cruz said he wanted to run it back.

"I would like to officially request a rematch," Cruz said. "I want to throw that down now and ask for a rematch for sure."

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.

Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
