Auburn now has a headliner for its 2019 class with the commitment of five-star Under Armour All-American Owen Pappoe. Here is what this outside linebacker with off-the-charts athleticism will add to the Tigers' defense:
What he brings: Speed, speed, speed and more speed. Pappoe is one of the most active and relentless linebacker prospects we have seen in a long time. He has an edge to him. Perhaps the best part of his game is his physical development upside. He is going to continue to grow, fill out and become more of a sturdy, take-on player between the tackles. He can play in space as a nickel backer and, much like former Auburn LB/DE Jeffery Holland, he can be used as designated pass-rusher which gives him huge third down value.
How he fits: As mentioned above, Holland has now departed the program entering the NFL draft early. Also done is senior LB Tre’ Williams, but aside from those two every linebacker in Auburn’s two deep is back. We anticipate Pappoe finding a role in the kicking game, as a rotational linebacker and DPR. We do not see him redshirting at this time.
College comparison: Dylan Moses, Alabama. Pappoe is actually ahead of where Moses was at the same stage in terms of instincts for the position, but the measurables, speed and range are eerily similar. Both players are uniquely gifted with physical traits you can’t coach.
How class is shaping up: This marks the sixth verbal commitment for the Tigers in a class that includes in-state QB Bo Nix. Under Armour All-American WR George Pickens is another top in-state talent. The defensive backfield is getting help in Jaylin Simpson and Cordale Flott. OC Jakai Clark is Pappoe’s teammate at Grayson High in Georgia.
