Everett Golson helps Florida State in 2015, but addition could hurt 2016

Everett Golson was brought to Florida State in hopes of the Seminoles extending their championship run.

That did not happen.

Still, the graduate transfer and senior quarterback helped No. 9 Florida State to 10 wins and a New Year’s Six bowl.

The Golson experiment was not quite the success Florida State hoped for in May, having its ACC championship streak ended by Clemson. Preseason, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher saw a vulnerable ACC and took a shot. It missed.

But it was hardly a failure. The Seminoles extended their streak of double-digit wins and a major bowl game to four seasons.

The real issue that could arise from Golson’s addition to the 2015 roster is whether it has any impact on 2016, the season in which it looked as if the Seminoles’ playoff window would reopen. There will be losses on defense at key positions, but the entire starting offense is to return, with redshirt junior Sean Maguire at quarterback.

Two weeks ago, Maguire said he made leaps as a passer during the spring when he was getting the majority of first-team practice reps and the past few games when he was gaining starting experience. For three seasons, Maguire was picking up as much as he could from the bench and in practice, but he said there is no way of duplicating the experience gained by starting in a meaningful game.

With Golson winning the job in preseason, it took seven starts away from Maguire. Might that hurt Florida State next season -- assuming Maguire is the starter -- especially with the season opener coming against Ole Miss? Might that have hurt the Seminoles this season against Georgia Tech and Clemson? The offense played poorly in both losses.

The positive is that Maguire was able to win the job during the season and his career includes two starts against Clemson, one of which was on the road, and a road start at Florida.

Golson’s signing brought mixed results for Florida State, but the view of that move could change depending on how the offense performs in 2016.
