If there's one thing Carissa Moore is not fond of it is losing. After getting tripped up against Lakey Peterson this morning, she was not a happy camper. It was a mistake she was took personally. Outside the competitor's area her father made mention that there'd been a scheduling mixup earlier in the morning, and that perhaps it threw her rhythm. But he's a smart man, he left it at that. The newly minted world champ wasn't her smiley, bubbly self. Clad in a green long-sleeve spring suit, she wore a deep scowl. Steaming down PCH she bear a vague resemblance to She Hulk.
And a scheduling snafu almost did her in again when Round 2 rolled around. Facing Aussie Felicity Palmateer, it was a heat Moore should have rolled through without a second thought. But she showed up late, paddling out after Palmateer already had already been hunting the lineup for a couple of minutes. But world titles don't come to those who blink, and Moore promptly seized control of the heat, ultimately surviving a harrowing day at an otherwise sleepy Monday morning at the U.S. Open.
"I started off the day coming in second in my Round 1 heat to Lakey and it was pretty frustrating," Moore said. "I wanted to come in to my first event after winning the Women's World Title pretty strong, but unfortunately I didn't make it through. I almost missed my Round 2 heat, but luckily I didn't and I made it through and I'm on to the third round."
If the salty locals that call the Huntington Pier home had been on their normal dawn patrol routine they all would've passed on their before-work sessions today, opting maybe for a Sunshine Special at the Sugar Shack instead. The surf was less than limp, dribbly maybe. After stiff northwest winds over the weekend the ocean temperature dropped down to the mid 60s, and any leftover south swell that was out there long since faded. There was just enough bump for the girls to take off out the back, figure-eight their way to the inside, and then maybe get off a floater or vertical snap before the wave was over. But there's a schedule to keep, and the show must surf on.
Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons, Moore's two biggest rivals, had a considerably easier morning. They made short work of the their Round 2 heats.
"It's definitely tough out there," Fitzgibbons said. "There were a few little pulses out there this morning with the tide push, and it's a little like Europe out there, it just switches on and off. I just had to make the most of what came through and make those inside connections and find some scores. I'm stoked to make it through to Round 3."
As the onshore wind came up later in the morning the pro juniors slogged through the quarterfinals. John Florence logged the highest heat score of the day, a 16.90. Kolohe Andino, Conner Coffin and Keanu Asing also advanced into the semis, which will conclude at the end of the week.
