Wednesday's World Cup Qualifiers: Who's In, Who's Out

Uruguay 1, Costa Rica 1

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Uruguay earned the final berth in the 32-nation field for next year's World Cup, tying Costa Rica 1-1 Wednesday night.

Sebastian Abreu scored for Uruguay on a header in the 70th minute, but Walter Centeno tied the score on a 16-yard shot in the 74th.

Uruguay, the 1930 and 1950 World Cup champion, won the home-and-home playoff on 2-1 aggregate. It beat Australia in a playoff to reach the 2002 World Cup, then lost to the Australians in a playoff for a berth at the 2006 tournament.

Costa Rica will miss the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

France 1, Ireland 1

SAINT-DENIS, France -- France qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup, getting a disputed overtime goal from William Gallas in a 1-1 tie against Ireland on Wednesday night.

Les Bleus avoided a penalty-kicks shootout and won the home-and-home, total-goals playoff 2-1, boosted by its 1-0 victory at Dublin last Saturday.

Robbie Keane put Ireland ahead in the 33rd minute, taking a pass from Damien Duff fand beating goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

France had an appeal for a penalty kick turned down by Swedish referee Martin Hansson after Nicolas Anelka tried to go around Given and went down in the eighth minute of overtime.

Gallas got the decisive goal when he bundled the ball in from close range past goalkeeper Shay Given in the 103rd. Thierry Henry appeared to control the ball twice with his hand before knocking it Gallas' path.

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni was livid and had to be calmed by officials, and Irish fans -- about 8,000 in one section behind the goal -- chanted "Cheat! Cheat!" at Henry

At the final whistle, Given collapsed and lay on the ground in dejection for several minutes as France celebrated. Gallas jumped into coach Raymond Domenech's arms.

Lloris made two great saves, on Keane in the first half and against Duff midway through the second.

Domenech had to reshuffle his team because of injuries, replacing Eric Abidal with Julien Escude to partner Gallas in the center of the defense.

Escude was injured in a clash of heads with teammate Patrice Evra, then was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Sebastien Squillaci in the ninth minute.

Slovenia 1, Russia 0

MARIBOR, Slovenia, Nov 18 - Slovenia beat Russia, who finished with nine men, 1-0 in the second leg of their World Cup playoff on Wednesday to clinch a place in next year's finals.

Zlatko Dedic scored the only goal just before the break when he stabbed in a Valter Birsa cross as Slovenia overcame a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Moscow to secure a ticket to South Africa on away goals following a 2-2 aggregate draw.

The Slovenians, ranked 49th in the world, caused a major upset to secure only their second appearance at soccer's greatest spectacle after making their World Cup debut in 2002.

Russia had substitute Alexander Kerzhakov sent off in the 66th minute following a violent clash with Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic and Yuri Zhirkov was also shown a red card in stoppage time.

Algeria 1, Egypt 0

KHARTOUM, Sudan -- Algeria qualified for its first World Cup since 1986, beating Egypt 1-0 in a tiebreaker playoff Wednesday night on Antar Yahya's goal from an acute angle in the 39th minute.

Egypt, whose only World Cup appearances were in 1934 and 1990, forced the playoff by beating Algeria 2-0 on an injury-time goal in Cairo last Saturday. That left the nations tied atop Africa Group C and set off several violent outbursts.

Algeria, which also appeared in the 1982 World Cup, completed the African field for next year's tournament, joining Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and host South Africa.

Yahya scored with a right-footed volley that beat goalkeeper Essam El Hadary.

Greece 1, Ukraine 0

DONETSK, Ukraine -- Greece reached the World Cup for just the second time, beating Ukraine 1-0 Wednesday night behind Dimitrios Salpigidis' goal in the 31st minute.

The teams had played a 0-0 tie last weekend in Athens, and Greece won the total-goals series on 1-0 aggregate.

Greece went 0-3 at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Salpigidis scored off a pass from Georgios Samaras for his second international goal in 29 appearances.

Portugal 1, Bosnia 0

ZENICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- Portugal qualified for the World Cup for the third time in a row on Wednesday, beating Bosnia 1-0 thanks to Raul Meireles' second-half goal in the second leg.

Portugal beat Bosnia 1-0 on Saturday in the first leg in Lisbon on a goal by Bruno Alves.

Nani's pass found Meireles, whose low shot in the 56th minute sent Portugal to South Africa next year. The Portuguese advanced despite not having star Cristiano Ronaldo for either game; he's sidelined with an ankle injury.

Portugal lost to France in the 2006 World Cup semifinals.
