We have gotten through the portion of the high school basketball season that features several multi-team events involving lots of travel every weekend. Teams are now diving into their district or regional play, and the competition is much more localized.
Playoffs, and the brackets that will pare down to state tournaments, are starting in many states. In Indiana, Lawrence Central was upset by Lawrence North 47-42 on Saturday. Central's season ends with a 22-2 record -- despite this, they remain in the top 25.
In California, Ontario Christian, Mater Dei, Archbishop Mitty and Etiwanda will start their respective California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Section Playoffs in anticipation of the CIF Open Division Championship, which will be played in late March.
Meanwhile, this week Sidwell Friends (DC) has two key matchups: Bullis on Monday night (Feb. 10) and Long Island Lutheran on Sunday (Feb. 16).
There are some teams that will make a push for the final top 25 rankings as they enter the postseason: Boswell (TX), Providence Academy (MN), Putnam City North (OK), Princess Anne (VA), Ridgeline (UT) and St. John's College Prep (DC).
For teams eligible within their state federation rules, the focus remains on finishing the season strong, so they can secure a bid to Chipotle Nationals, which will take place April 3-5 in Indiana, and be televised on ESPN Networks.
