Liberty match own WNBA record, hit 19 3s in rout of Sun

NEW YORK -- The Liberty matched their WNBA record by hitting 19 3-pointers in a 100-52 rout of the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

The margin of victory was the second largest in league history, falling short of the 59-point record held by Minnesota in a win over Indiana in 2017. Sunday's win set the franchise mark for largest margin of victory, eclipsing a 43-point blowout over Washington in 1998.

Sabrina Ionescu led New York with 18 points, and Jonquel Jones added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich also had 13 points. All four sat out for nearly the entire fourth quarter.

The Liberty finished 19-of-32 on 3-point attempts, led by Ionescu, who converted 4 of 6 shots from long distance.

"It was great to be able to see the contribution from everyone," Ionescu said after the game. "Everyone came out really ready. Everyone scored and contributed in a really impactful way from the start to finish."

New York improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 1997 season.

"It was fun. It's fun to be a part of," Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said after the game. "I'm sure it was fun for them to play. But their commitment to excellence. I mean, we don't have to push them too hard because we've got some of the best players here, and they want to be great."

New York also hit 19 3-pointers against Chicago on May 22 to break the previous league record. The Liberty almost topped that mark through three quarters, hitting 18 3s in the first 30 minutes, but they went cold in the fourth from the outside, making only one.

The Liberty finished a busy week by winning their fourth game in six days. They now have a bit of a break, with their next game in Washington on Thursday.

Sunday's matchup was the first game of the three-week Commissioner's Cup in-season tournament. New York made the final last year before losing to Minnesota. The Liberty got their revenge by winning the WNBA championship.

New York jumped out early vs. Connecticut, building a 31-13 lead after one quarter as Stewart, Ionescu, Fiebich and Jones combined for all of the points. The Liberty kept it rolling in the second quarter, extending the advantage to 60-28 at the half. New York shot 68% from the field in the first half, including 12 made 3-pointers.

The Liberty didn't let up in the third quarter, outscoring the Sun 30-8 in the frame.

Despite leading by 50 points, New York challenged a foul committed by Ionescu on a 3-point shot by Marina Mabrey. New York won the challenge, and the star guard ran on the court in excitement then high-fived the Liberty staff for challenging the call.

"I was just really in the moment, but I knew I didn't foul her," Ionescu said. "So very thankful for my coaches and entrusting me with the fact that I asked for a challenge because I know I didn't. My ponytail was sideways. She hit me. ... It was a great opportunity for us to challenge and make sure that I can continue to earn Sandy's trust to be able to continue to challenge."

Tina Charles and Jacy Sheldon led Connecticut (1-6) with 10 points each.
