French Open 2025: Cameron Norrie, Jacob Fearnley win to set up all-British third round

Cameron Norrie will face Jacob Fearnley in all-British clash in the French Open men's third round after both came through their second-round matchups on Thursday.

Norris backed up his Daniil Medvedev upset with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Federico Gómez, before Fearnley joined him in round three after French 22nd seed Ugo Humbert retired hurt in the second set.

After a gruelling first set, Norrie dispatched Gómez 7-6 (9), 6-2, 6-1.

"It was completely different kind of a match today," Norrie said. "Different emotions going into the match being the favorite. Really different playing on a much smaller court. I was obviously a bit nervous for the match. I was excited as well.

"I played a very steady kind of six, seven out of 10 for the whole time. Yeah, it showed in the score. I was very happy with the way I handled it. I felt I didn't play amazing, didn't play that badly. Didn't give him much. So it was a good day."

After seeing off 11th-seed Medvedev in five sets on Sunday, Norrie may have been fearing another marathon when Gómez, also unseeded, took him all the way in the first set.

But after surviving the tiebreak, Norrie broke his competitor five times on the way to a victory that seals a tied career-best at the French Open. Norrie, 32, reached the third round -- but no further -- at Roland Garros in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Fearnley reached the third round at Roland Garros in hi debut appearance, although not in the manner he would have wanted, after Humbert suffered a painful fall in the second set.

The British No. 2 had taken the first set 6-3 but was down a break in the second when Humbert appeared to hurt his ankle while sliding to the ball on his forehand side.

Following a lengthy medical timeout, Humbert attempted to play on but after dropping his serve to level the set at 4-4 he walked to the net to signal he could not play on.
