TOP STORY: Chelsea plan January spending
Chelsea had a busy summer transfer window and are ready to continue being active when January arrives as they aim to improve their midfield, reports The Evening Standard.
They failed with a late £50 million attempt to sign Southampton's Romeo Lavia -- who had not long joined the Saints from Manchester City -- having already missed out on Ajax Amsterdam's Edson Alvarez after offering £40m.
They also had a late offer for PSV Eindhoven's Ibrahim Sangare rejected, although they did bring in Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus.
However, they still haven't given up on recruiting further and Mexico international Alvarez remains their favoured option as they look to revisit that position in the winter.
There will be encouragement as the 24-year-old reportedly told Ajax that he wanted to move to Stamford Bridge, although the Eredivisie giants insisted he wasn't able to leave so late in the window.
Chelsea aren't stopping there. They are also working to sign 19-year-old attacking midfielder Arsen Zakharyan from Dinamo Moscow.
The Blues looked at Zakharyan during the summer but it was deemed impossible to sign him due to sanctions the west have placed on Russia.
The ongoing invasion of Ukraine has made it difficult to sign players from Russia, limiting the ability to pay transfer fees or for players to move between countries.
Chelsea are willing to work to find a solution in the coming months to see Zakharyan join for the £12.6m fee in his release clause.

22.17 BST: Bayern Munich have dismissed speculation linking them with a move for Harry Kane.
The Bundesliga champions have recently been linked with the 29-year-old Tottenham Hotspur striker as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, but speaking to reporters about the situation on Tuesday, as quoted by Sport1, club sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: "There's nothing to it, I have full confidence in our boys, they can score any goals."
21.46 BST: Pep Guardiola rejected multiple loan requests for Julian Alvarez in the summer, according to the Here We Go Podcast.
The 22-year-old Manchester City striker is reported to have been on the radar of around 10 clubs, including Brighton Hove Albion, who wanted him included on loan as part of the transfer negotiations for Marc Cucurella. He has scored two goals in four Premier League appearances so far this season.
21.18 BST: Internazionale are willing to part ways with Nicolo Barella for a fee of €70million, reports Calciomercato.
It is understood that a dip in the 25-year-old midfielder's form has seen a change in stance from the San Siro hierarchy, who are now open to moving him on if his valuation is met in January.
The Italy international has attracted interest from clubs in both the Premier League and La Liga.
20.59 BST: Talks over a new contract between Bournemouth and Jefferson Lerma have begun, reveals Ekrem Konur.
The 27-year-old-midfielder is reported to be on the radar of clubs in Spain ahead of a potential January move, and it looks as though the Cherries are keen to ensure he remains at the Vitality Stadium beyond his current deal that entered the final 12 months in June.
20.30 BST: Wolves have identified Andy Carroll as an alternative option to Diego Costa, according to the Telegraph.
As the Premier League club continue to face problems over securing a work permit for the former Chelsea star, the latest indicates that they could make a move for Carroll if problems persist. The 33-year-old striker is currently a free agent after his contract expired with West Bromwich Albion in the summer.
20.06 BST: Ola Solbakken is set to sign with Roma on a free transfer in January, says Calciomercato.
With Jose Mourinho still keen on reinforcing his side with another striker, the Giallorossi have moved quickly to take the lead in the race for the 23-year-old Bodo Glimt star, with the report suggesting that the move is "practically complete."
It is believed that he will sign a four-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico.
19.35 BST: Fenerbahce are looking to make a move for Marseille striker Cedric Bakambu, according to Ajansspor.
It is reported that the Super Lig side contacted the 31-year-old after he was left out of Marseille's Champions League squad, and they are hopeful of getting a deal over the line before the transfer window in Turkey closes.
The Yellow Canaries have also recently been linked with Cristiano Ronaldo.
19.09 BST: In more Brazil-related news, Newcastle United and Barcelona are tracking Selecao youth international Andrey Santos, writes TNT Sports.
The 18-year-old Vasco da Gama midfielder has recently signed a new 2027 contract at the club, but it is understood that multiple clubs across Europe have been keeping tabs on his situation.
18.32 BST: Douglas Luiz is planning to leave Aston Villa on a free transfer, reports UOL.
Steven Gerrard's side were understood to have received plenty of interest for his signature on deadline day, but having decided against moving him on, the latest indicates that the 24-year-old midfielder sees his future away from the club. He will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with other sides on Jan. 1.
17.57 BST: Fresh off winning the 2022 Euros with England, midfielder Keira Walsh is in discussions with Barcelona over a world-record transfer deal to move to Spain, reports Sky Sports.
The 25-year-old has called Manchester City home since 2014, where she has won five league cups and three FA cups, and Man City has reportedly already rejected three offers from Barcelona.
17.25 BST: Brighton Hove Albion midfielder Steven Alzate is in talks with Standard Liege, reveals the Telegraph.
It is reported that the 23-year-old had previously had a deal agreed with West Bromwich Albion, but failure to complete the paperwork on time saw his switch to the Hawthorns fall through.
Alzate scored on his sole appearance this season during the 3-0 EFL Cup win over Forest Green.
16.27 BST: The agent who acted as an intermediary in Antonio Rudiger's move to Real Madrid has claimed that the contract offered by the Spanish club was worth the least of all those offered to the defender in the summer.
Rudiger, 29, left Chelsea after five years at the end of last season when he contract expired, and Saif Rubie said the Blues did not show much desire to keep hold of the Germany international.
"What if I told you Chelsea, and the old regime, basically made next to no effort to keep the player," Rubie told talkSPORT. "At the time he was very happy to stay and potentially be the captain of the club. He was offered a contract that was half the amount Romelu Lukaku were earning."
Rubie added that, of all the offers that Rudiger received, the one from the Bernabeu was the least lucrative.
"Let me confirm this, live on air, the Real Madrid deal was the smallest deal on offer," he said. "There was a club in England offering almost double the amount and a club in Europe doubling the amount.
"I'm not going to discuss the specifics. Everyone knows there was teams interested in this player. He was one of the best in the world."
15.31 BST: Marseille's Eric Bailly has claimed he did not get a fair chance at Manchester United because the club favour English players.
Bailly joined Marseille on loan this summer after falling out of favour at Old Trafford following his move from Villarreal in 2016.
The Ivory Coast centre-back has made 113 appearances for United but suggested he could have more were it not for players ahead of him in the pecking order.
"The club should avoid favouring English players and give everyone a chance," Bailly said in a news conference before Marseille's opening Champions League game against Tottenham Hotspur.
"[The club should] encourage competition in the dressing room, not just look out for some. I've always had the feeling that the national player was prioritised.
"That doesn't happen at Chelsea or other big Premier League clubs. Some people take it for granted that they are going to start, and that weakens the team. Luckily [Erik] Ten Hag has a lot of character and I hope he can change that dynamic."
14.25 BST: Kylian Mbappe has revealed that French President Emamanuel Macron was one of the people who tried to talk him out of leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid this summer.
Mbappe, 23, had been widely expected to move to the Bernabeu this summer, with his PSG contract due to expire. But after a late change of heart, Mbappe instead signed a new three-year contract with PSG.
Madrid club president Florentino Perez claimed at the time that Macron had spoken to Mbappe about the staying in Paris, and the France international confirmed that was true in an interview with The New York Times.
"I never imagined I'm gonna talk with the president about my future, about my future in my career, so it's something crazy, really something crazy," he said. "He told me: 'I want you to stay. I don't want you to leave now. You are so important for the country.'"
Mbappe said that Macron had told him "you have time to leave, you can stay a little bit more," and the striker added: "Of course, when the president says that to you, that counts."

13.36 BST: Wolves have hit a snag in their hopes of signing striker Diego Costa (see 08.00 BST), according to Sky Sports.
The striker has not played any professional matches since his last appearance for Atletico Mineiro on Dec. 12 last year, shortly after which his contract was terminated.
Wolves have appealed the decision, with the result of that expected within 48 hours.
12.41 BST: Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is the next in line to step up talks with the club over a new contract, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Reece James signed a new deal on Monday that committed him to the club until 2027, with the option of a further year, and made the 22-year-old one of the club's highest-paid players.
Now Mount, 23, is set to emulate his fellow England international and Chelsea academy graduate by signing a lucrative new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge to replace his current deal, which is due to expire in two years' time.
11.34 BST: A raucous crowd of about 20,000 fans welcomed Brazilian star Marcelo to Olympiakos on Monday.
The fans chanted and lit flares as the new signing made his way on to the field at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in the port of Piraeus.
Marcelo, accompanied by his wife and two sons, arrived at Athens International Airport in the afternoon by private jet and was escorted to the stadium by club sports director Christian Karembeu.
He entered the field wearing the same No. 12 he wore at Real Madrid for the past 16 seasons, during which time he became the club's most decorated player ever with 25 trophies.
"Thank you. I am very happy and satisfied. My family too. I hope to help the team with great devotion," Marcelo told the fans, adding in Greek, "Let's go, Olympiakos!"

10.39 BST: Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic is set to join Sharjah FC on a three-year contract, sources have confirmed to ESPN's Sam Marsden.
The transfer window closed in Spain last week, but it remains open in the United Arab Emirates, so Pjanic is still able to leave this month.
Barca coach Xavi Hernandez said recently he was "counting on" Pjanic this season but the Bosnian's lack of game time in the first four games of the season has led him to consider his options.
Pjanic's contract at Camp Nou runs until 2024 but his representatives are negotiating a termination that will allow him to join Sharjah for free.
The departure of Pjanic will create more space for Barca within their LaLiga-imposed salary cap, which should allow them to register a new deal for Gavi.
Talks have been ongoing with Gavi's camp for months and, despite interest from across Europe in the midfielder, sources expect him to sign new terms with Barca soon.

09.46 BST: Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has revealed that he recommended that his club signed RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol in the summer.
Gvardiol, 20, was linked with a move to Stamdford Bridge in the summer, but remained in the Bundesliga as the Blues instead signed Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana.
"At the club, they asked me about Josko, I told them all the best," Kovacic said when asked about his Croatia international teammate. "I don't need to say anything about his football, they know what kind of player he is, and his character is excellent.
"I have seen in the national team how eager he is to play, he has a great career ahead of him, and I hope that one day we will play together in the club."
08.52 BST: Manchester City midfielder Keira Walsh dodged questions about her future at the club amid continued speculation over a move to Barcelona.
The BBC reported last month and Barca had a six-figure bid for Walsh rejected by City, who are preparing for the start of the new WSL season.
However, Spanish champions Barca will reportedly come back with an increased bid for the 25-year-old, who was Player of the Match as England won the final of the European Championship a month ago.
When asked about her future at a news conference ahead of Tuesday's match against Luxembourg, Walsh would only say: "My focus is on England right now."
08.00 BST: Former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is due to arrive in the UK on Tuesday for a medical ahead of his proposed free transfer to Wolves, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Wolves have been left short of strikers in their squad after summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic sustained a knee ligament injury during his debut on Saturday, while Raul Jimenez missed the opening two games of the season with a knee injury.
Costa, 33, had been without a club since leaving Atletico Mineiro in January after five months at the club, during which he scored four goals in 15 games and lifted the Brazilian league title.
The Spain international is set to undergo a medical on Wednesday, while Wolves do not anticipate any issues with him gaining a UK work permit.
Costa previously helped Atletico Madrid to the LaLiga title in 2014 before embarking on a successful three-year spell at Chelsea, where he scored 59 goals in 120 games in all competitions and won two Premier League titles in 2015 and 2017, as well as the League Cup in 2015. He left to return to Atletico in 2017 and helped the club to another LaLiga title in 2021, but left to return to his native Brazil last summer and join Atletico Mineiro.

- Alberto Lunghi has caught the attentions of Internazionale and Fiorentina after terminating his contract with Perugia, as reported by Calciomercato. This comes two years after Juventus strongly wanted to sign the winger and were ready to submit an offer close to €1m for the now 19-year-old.
- Lille have confirmed that Yusuf Yazici has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2022-23 campaign. Yazici went through Trabzonspor's academy before joining Lille in 2019 and the Turkey international spent the second half of last season on loan with CSKA Moscow.
- After his earlier report, Fabrizio Romano has now said that Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic could fly to the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday. Once he's there, details will be discussed for a possible three-year deal before the Bosnia & Herzegovina international signs for Sharjah FC.
- Lorient have completed the signing of Yoann Cathline from Guingamp. L'Equipe explain that the striker has joined the Ligue 1 side after signing a contract that will last until 2027, while Guingamp have received €2.7m with a possible €1m in bonuses.
