"One always returns where he was happy," a tweet from Estudiantes read and was accompanied by a video of Rojo's career highlights. "Because the sense of belonging is much stronger.
"Your dream and that of the Pincha Family has become a reality. We meet again. Welcome back Marcos! We welcome you back with our hearts!"
Rojo, 29, has been at United for six years, joining the club from Sporting Lisbon in a £16 million transfer, but has had limited playing time in recent seasons.
He is looking for a spark in his career, as he tries to make Argentina's squad for this summer's Copa America. Rojo has made nine appearances for United this season.
He returns to his boyhood club for the first time since leaving Estudiantes in 2011 to join Spartak Moscow. He is tied to United until June 2021.
