Schalke's Amine Harit allowed to return to Germany after fatal car crash

Morocco international Amine Harit has been allowed to return to Germany after his passport was suspended following a fatal car crash in Marrakesh on Friday.

According to reports, Harit's car collided with a pedestrian who was attempting to cross a road in the Moroccan city and he was briefly taken into custody by local police. He was released pending an investigation.

Hicham Boulatar, the regional authority's head of communications in Marrakech, said the victim was 29 or 30 years old, and that Harit's brother was also in the vehicle.

Prosecutors in Morocco have said the Schalke player could face involuntary homicide charges and that a first hearing is scheduled for next week, Spiegel Online reported. Schalke released a club statement on Saturday confirming that Harit was at the wheel.

"It was tragic accident," Schalke sporting executive Christian Heidel told reporters upon Schalke's arrival in China for a preseason tour. "There are so many reports out there, and in large parts it is far away from the truth."

Harit was one of the breakout stars of the 2017-18 Bundesliga season. He started for Morocco in their World Cup opener against Iran but didn't play again in the tournament.
