SAMARA, Russia -- Mexico's 24-year-old defender Carlos Salcedo poured doubt onto his national team future following El Tri's 2-0 loss to Brazil, while Rafa Marquez confirmed his retirement.
The Eintracht Frankfurt defender is considered a big part of the next generation of Mexico players, but Salcedo seemed to suggest his future with the team is not certain, despite having been one of El Tri's best players at the World Cup.
"I have to disconnect from many things and think about what to do with my future," Salcedo said after the match. "In my [club] team I'm very relaxed, I'm talking about things that could happen with the national team, they are my own issues, personal ones and I have to see and be very honest with myself."
Pressed on what he meant, Salcedo said: "I'm going to look at it from a objective point of view, talk about it with my family, be honest with myself. There's a lot to think about, a lot of things in my head right now.
"They are very personal things and I want to be cautious, not to talk too much, not to talk too little."
Marquez, 39, who already ended his club career earlier this year, played in his final professional game. He told journalists after the game that he would continue to work in the game in some capacity in the future.
"For now I think I'll enjoy some free time," Marquez said. "These have been 22 years of uninterrupted career and my future will surely be working in football."
Striker Oribe Peralta, 34, also said ahead of the tournament that he would also be retiring from the national team after the World Cup.
