Former MLS goalkeeper Josh Wicks tested positive for cocaine after a game for his Swedish club Sirius this month.
The American's contract with the team will be terminated as a result. He had just signed a two-year deal in December but tested positive following the first game of the season.
"He is devastated -- football is his work and now he cannot practise it," Sirius chairman Ove Sjoeblom said at a news conference on Thursday.
"He's not being fired. It is rather a termination of a contract according to its terms."
Wicks, 34, has played in Scandinavia since leaving MLS in 2010. He appeared in 25 league games for the LA Galaxy and D.C. United between 2008-09, and earlier played for the Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers before they joined MLS.
