Manchester City are set to send striker Olarenwaju Kayode to Shakhtar Donetsk on loan as they try to conclude a deal for Shakhtar's Fred, sources close to the Premier League club have told ESPN FC.
City tried to sign Brazil international Fred during the January window but were unable to agree a deal with the Ukrainian club, who were keen to keep him for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
But coach Pep Guardiola remains determined to land the defensive midfielder, whose free kick earned a 2-1 Champions League victory over Roma last month.
City remain in talks with Shakhtar and are ready to offer Kayode in a sub-loan from sister club Girona in a move they hope will help them bring in Fred in the summer.
Kayode joined City from Austria Vienna in August but was immediately sent to Girona on a season-long loan.
He finished as top scorer in Austria's top division last season with 17 goals in 33 games and signed a four-year deal at City.
