Sergio Gomez leaves Barcelona to join Borussia Dortmund in €3m deal

Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Sergio Gomez on a long-term contract from Barcelona.

During a busy last 48 hours of the January transfer window, Dortmund announced the signing of the 17-year-old Barcelona player for a "set fee," reported to be his €3 million release clause.

"Sergio Gomez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his age in the world," Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told the club's official website.

"We've been interested in him for some time and are happy that he has decided to join Borussia Dortmund despite offers from many top European clubs."

The Spain youth international will join his new teammates in training next week, but "will get match practice in our under-19s until the summer," Zorc said.

The La Masia graduate, named second best player at the Under-17 World Cup last year behind England's Philip Foden, said he was delighted to have signed for "one of the big European clubs" and promised to give it his all from day one on.

Gomez is a versatile attacking player, and was also linked with Premier League clubs Arsenal and Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Dortmund announced that winger Andrey Yarmolenko, 28, is set for a longer spell on the sidelines with a tendon injury in his foot. The Ukraine international sustained the injury in the 2-2 draw with Freiburg last weekend.

He has scored six goals and set up a further six since joining Dortmund from Dinamo Kiev in August 2017, but, much like the rest of the BVB team, has been struggling for form in recent weeks and months.
