Dynamo Dresden defender Marc Wachs underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday following a shooting incident that left the player's aunt dead.
The second-tier German club said Wachs was not in immediate danger following the surgery.
Police told German wire service DPA that the aunt's husband was also injured in the shooting, which occurred near a store she ran in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt.
"We are shocked, stunned and deeply affected," Dresden sporting director Ralf Minge said in statement.
"The entire Dynamo family stands behind Marc and his family. We will be there wherever our help and support is needed."
Wachs moved to Dresden from Mainz in the summer after the club were promoted to the second tier last season.
