Werder Bremen have completed the signing of Finland defender Niklas Moisander from Serie A club Sampdoria.
The former Ajax, Zwolle and Alkmaar defender, 30, won three league titles in Netherlands and has appeared 51 times for his country.
"Niklas fits the bill for what we were looking for," said Bremen's director of sport Frank Baumann.
"He's got all the necessary experience, he was captain of the Finland national team and Ajax for a long time and he has all it takes to assume a leading role in our club."
Moisander played 22 times for Sampdoria last season, but is currently sidelined after undergoing ankle surgery at the end of the campaign.

He is nevertheless looking forward to pulling on a Bremen shirt this season.
"I can hardly describe how happy I am," he said on Bremen's website. "Werder are a huge club.
"During my time with Petri Pasanen in the Finland national team, he would say a lot about Bremen -- about the city, the club and the fans.
"He was always really enthusiastic. I hope to become a key player here quickly and make my contribution to the team."
Moisander has made the move for an undisclosed fee.
