France call up Sevilla's Adil Rami amid Raphael Varane fitness doubts

France have called up Sevilla defender Adil Rami as a standby amid doubts over Raphael Varane's availability for Euro 2016.

Real Madrid's Varane was named in coach Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad on May 12 but he suffered a thigh injury while training with his club over the weekend.

The injury is expected to rule Varane out of Saturday's Champions League with city rivals Atletico Madrid in Milan, and reports in Spain suggest Varane faces a three-week layoff, which raises questions over his availability for the European Championship, which starts on June 10.

Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti, who can cover either the centre-back or left-back berths, was named among Deschamps' eight reserves, while clubmate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Saint-Etienne's Loic Perrin were also considered candidates, along with Atletico's Lucas Hernandez.

However, France announced on Monday that Rami, 30, had been asked to join the training camp as cover in case Varane cannot make it.

A statement read: "Following Raphael Varane's injury and while waiting for further information on the condition of the Real Madrid defender, Didier Deschamps has called up Adil Rami who will join the French team on Tuesday evening at Clairefontaine."

Rami, whose last cap was in June 2013, had criticised Deschamps last week after failing to make the initial squad selection.
