Liga MX is jam-packed with goalkeeping talent, but who's the cream of the crop? Our experts Tom Marshall, Nayib Moran, Cesar Hernandez and Eric Gomez name their No. 1s in the position.
Alfredo Talavera, Toluca
The goalkeeping position is one of the strongest in Liga MX, but I'd go for Talavera every single time. The Toluca keeper is strong in the air, a nimble shot stopper, decent enough with his feet and in his prime at 34.
There is a reason why Talavera has been Mexico's No. 1 of late and the experience he has at international level sets him apart from the other keepers in the league with the exceptions of Cruz Azul's Jesus Corona and 44-year-old Pachuca man Oscar "Conejo" Perez.
You nearly forget about Talavera when Queretaro's Tiago Volpi or Chiapas' Moises Munoz are grabbing headlines with flashy saves, but that's because his quality is almost a given these days. Put simply, Talavera is the most complete, consistent and well-rounded keeper in Mexico's top division and has been for the last couple of years.
Of the other younger keepers, Argentina international Nahuel Guzman is a huge presence in the Tigres goal and commands his area well, while Volpi has a bright future, possibly in Europe, if he can show his current form consistently. Both are exciting, but you know exactly what you're getting with Talavera. -- Tom Marshall (@mexicoworldcup)
Nahuel Guzman, Tigres
In Tigres' last two league championships, there's been one common theme that's been just as decisive as Andre-Pierre Gignac's goals: Guzman's maestro performances in goal.
Guzman's ability to get in the head of penalty takers, causing them to fail with their executions, has allowed Tigres to walk out as victors in two Liga MX finals. His recent exploits, which took place in the 2016 Apertura final, saw him block three penalties and shut down America's titles hopes in emphatic fashion.
There are times when Guzman commits bizarre mistakes; his desire to take risks and play like Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer sometimes sees him give away easy goals. But his actions in critical moments have helped Tigres become a dominant force in Mexican football.
His playing style and bravado are characteristics that have allowed him to be a constant in the Argentina national team fold, even if he isn't a starter. It's not common to see Liga MX footballers representing national teams of the caliber of Argentina, Brazil or Uruguay, but Guzman is a special case and there is no doubt that if Tigres manage to have a golden age, his displays will play a big part. -- Nayib Moran (@nayibmoran)
Tiago Volpi, Queretaro
Although a few different goalkeepers have done exceptional jobs this season, the current leading Liga MX name in net is Volpi.
Despite Queretaro's recent success in the attack, there is no doubt that the team's most important and talented player is the Brazilian goalkeeper. Four months after single-handedly winning a Copa MX title for Los Gallos Blancos, Volpi is once again in fine form in 2017.
With a total of 38 saves in his first eight matches of the season, the goalkeeper comes second only to Necaxa's Marcelo Barovero. Volpi is clearly shining and with new manager Jaime "Jimmy" Lozano now leading the side, there is plenty of reason to believe that Queretaro will make a run for the title.
To see Volpi at his best, keep an eye on Saturday's match against Monterrey. Considering the fact that Los Rayados have more shots than any other Liga MX side, this weekend's clash in Monterrey is a perfect opportunity for Volpi to showcase his remarkable talents. -- Cesar Hernandez (@cesarhfutbol)
Agustin Marchesin, Club America
There's a reason why America shelled out the cash to bring in Marchesin. Even though the Mexico City club had Munoz and Hugo Gonzalez on the roster, it rolled the dice and bought Marchesin from Santos Laguna.
His fantastic reflexes, big presence in goal and impressive consistency have quickly made him the country's best goalkeeper. This season, Marchesin began his America career by being on the receiving end of highlight-reel goals, but he quickly bounced back and has been rock solid ever since.
Munoz and Gonzalez created a hole that America fans won't soon forget, but if Marchesin keeps his act up, supporters will quickly elevate him to the status of an idol. -- Eric Gomez (@EricGomez86)
