Bilic's substitutions fail to secure West Ham points against Tottenham

West Ham managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday in a woeful last five minutes at White Hart Lane.

Deservedly leading 1-0 at the break and 2-1 ahead with just two minutes of normal time left, Slaven Bilic's men managed to not only concede an equaliser, but then gave away a stupid penalty to leave a jubilant home crowd to celebrate an unlikely 3-2 win.

With Winston Reid getting a red card for an elbow on Harry Kane in the dying seconds, it's hard to see how the day could have gone worse for the dazed Hammers.

The shame of it was that the Hammers kept Spurs quiet for long periods and the north Londoners could not have complained had the visitors taken all three points. As it is, West Ham now face a difficult three matches with morale low and the defence shipping goals at an alarming rate. The fans are frustrated and getting angry and it looks as if a torrid few months lie ahead.

Positives

The Hammers played well enough for most of the match but a game lasts 90 minutes plus added time and that's too long for this porous outfit.

Negatives

Three minutes of utter madness denied West Ham a point they deserved; worse, this is the type of loss that will severely dent team morale.

Manager rating out of 10

4 -- Two bad substitutions cost Bilic a win and fans are giving him a hard time at the moment. It's becoming increasingly apparent that none of Bilic's close season transfers are working well and the fact that the manager elected to start with Diafra Sakho -- a player he tried to unload to West Brom in the summer -- says much about the current malaise.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Darren Randolph, 5 -- In trying to divert Son Heung-Min's low cross, the Irish keeper could only divert the ball to Harry Kane to provide Spurs with their late equaliser. Having made an excellent save earlier to deny Eric Dier, it was a tough day for Randolph.

DF Cheikhou Kouyate, 6 -- Kouyate was involved in a number of tussles in a strong performance.

DF Winston Reid, 6 -- Looked comfortable for most of the match and earned the penalty that Manuel Lanzini dispatched to put the Hammers 2-1 up. It all fell apart in the closing stages, however, and a red card means the Kiwi will miss some crucial games.

DF Angelo Ogbonna, 6 -- The Italian did his job well until the closing minutes.

MF Michail Antonio, 7 -- Another headed goal, Antonio worked hard and is one of the club's few bright spots this season.

MF Manuel Lanzini, 7 -- Scored with the penalty and looked lively.

MF Pedro Obiang, 6 -- As usual, worked without fuss and limelight.

MF Aaron Cresswell, 7 -- Worked hard and denied Spurs down the flank in an impressive first half.

MF Dimitri Payet, 7 -- Worried Spurs throughout and it was noticeable the fightback came when the French international was substituted. Could he really have not managed another five minutes?

FW Andre Ayew, 6 -- Still not showing the type of form he had with Swansea.

FW Diafra Sakho, 6 -- Worked hard but lacks match sharpness.

Substitutes

MF Havard Nordtveit, N/R -- After replacing Payet on 85 minutes, the Norwegian gave away a needless penalty, stretching for a ball he couldn't reach and bringing Son down with his trailing leg. A shocking performance from the bench.

FW Edimilson Fernandes, 5 -- Replaced Ayew in a double substitution with Zaza but contributed little.

FW Simone Zaza, 4 -- Came on for Sakho just after the hour and looked totally out of place. Had a glorious chance to kill the game off when clean through with two men available, but dithered and lost the opportunity to even supply a decent pass. Whatever the reason, Zaza just isn't cutting it in the Premier League.
