Newcastle have confirmed that Bordeaux midfielder Henri Saivet is having a medical and discussing terms ahead of a January window move.
Saivet could be one of two new additions to head coach Steve McClaren's midfield options, with Press Association Sport reporting that the Magpies have formalised their interest in Swansea's Jonjo Shelvey.

Senegal international Saivet, 25, who has spent much of his career playing as a winger but has occupied a central role this season, could cost more than £4 million.
Shelvey, also a target for former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, now at Crystal Palace, appears likely to move on after losing his place in the Swansea team.
He was involved in a row with a Swans fan following the club's 3-2 FA Cup third round defeat by League Two Oxford and has been linked with a £10m switch to St James' Park.
