Brazil's Renato Augusto: Bundesliga return with Schalke a 'good idea'

Renato Augusto believes returning to the Bundesliga with Schalke "would be a good idea" after earning an international recall for Brazil.

Augusto, 27, joined Bayer Leverkusen from Flamengo as a 20-year-old back in 2008, but returned to Brazil with Corinthians in December 2012 after four-and-a-half years in the Bundesliga.

The playmaker recently returned at international level for Brazil, and scored for the Selecao in the 3-0 victory against Peru in mid-November's 2018 World Cup CONMEBOL qualifying match.

Sport Bild reported on Wednesday that the Brazilian could be on his way back to Bundesliga, with Schalke scouting him as a potential replacement for Julian Draxler, who left the club for Wolfsburg on the final day of the summer transfer window.

"I owe a lot to Corinthians, and I only want the best for the club," Augusto told the paper. "But I still have the goal to return to Europe one day. Preferably to Germany and a club playing in a European competition. Schalke would be a good idea."

The playmaker won his first cap since 2011 because of his displays at Corinthians, which helped the club win the Brazilian championship this season.

Following Augusto's callup, Brazil manager Carlos Dunga cited the influence that featuring in the Bundesliga has had on the player's development.

"He already has experience of having gone through German football, where he was reconfigured," Dunga said in quotes reported by Goal. "He has great vision and distribution, can shoot from long distance, [and] passes very well. All those things may help us."
